To save runaways from slavery who were trying to make lives in the North “illegally,” local Vigilance Committees formed. They kept watch for slave catchers, secreted away those in danger, and posted placards that outed slave catchers, sometimes hounding them till they left town.

As a college student in 1940, Pauli Murray was jailed for not giving up her bus seat. As an attorney, Murray articulated the arguments that ultimately overturned Jim Crow in the Supreme Court in 1954 & Jane Crow in 1971 when courts agreed that the equal protection clause applies to women.

We buried Joy Cabarrus Speakes today. It was a beautiful service. She was one of the 1951 strikers and a plaintiff of Brown v. Board by inclusion of the Davis v. Prince Edward case. It was a surreal moment, but I'm thankful we could celebrate her life together.
