I became a biologist because of a museum exhibit. Real artifacts tell stories that are more powerful than anything we can get from scrolling. They are part of our engine for training the next generation of scientists. 🧪 scienceforeveryone.science/the-awesomen...

The awesomeness of museums
Genuine artifacts tell the richest stories that fill our souls. And they fuel the scientific enterprise.

Teach your son to wait. Teach him that other people are as important as he is. Teach him to apologize and go back to the end of the line if he made an entitled decision. Teach him that girls and women deserve respect in *all* scenarios—not just during sex.

i worry that men think being A Good Guy is dramatically and heroically intervening on behalf of an endangered woman and then being publicly rewarded on a grand scale when actually being A Good Guy is just usually saying, “hey man that’s not funny” or “wow that’s fucked up” and there is no reward

Interesting conclusions here. I don't have the statistical know-how to evaluate the methodology, but I'd love to hear what evolutionary medicine folks think. #EvMed

*Sigh* There is no "fertility crisis," but even if there were it's worth remembering that teen mothers are at higher risk for pregnancy complications & low birth weight babies and have higher infant mortality.

An interesting read. Also, reminder: this is what wearing a corset does to your internal organs.
An illustration showing how the cinched waist created by wearing a corset compresses and displaces various internal organs that are important for keeping you alive.

I have yet to have an opportunity to teach it, but a few years ago I designed a seminar explicitly to help students appreciate that science is *not* apolitical. This is from the course description. Hopefully someday. #ScienceIsNotNeutral
The scientific method has been fundamental to shaping humans’ understanding of our world and ourselves for centuries. In modern American society, capital-S ‘Science’ is often situated as an epistemological gold standard, and scientists are ascribed a degree of objectivity that is reinforced through language emphasizing both a “self-correcting” process and “evidence-based” conclusions. Scientists, however, are people, and like all people their individual identities, backgrounds, beliefs, and biases shape the questions they ask and the approaches they use to investigate those questions. In this course we will examine the more subjective aspects of science: Who becomes a scientist, and who gets left out? How does the weight of history and culture influence the direction of scientific inquiry? What are the consequences of undervaluing contributions from ‘non-traditional’ sources – what have we lost, for example, by disregarding indigenous knowledge about local ecosystems? Through interrogation of these and related topics students will learn to recognize and appreciate the contingent nature of scientific progression.

Another example of "watching Law & Order will make you realize time is a flat circle": in a 1994 episode I saw yesterday (about a real estate guy who bilked people out of millions) there was a throwaway line about Trump wanting to privatize Central Park and run it at a profit. 🫠

Every year we make the case for keeping leaves, branches, & plant stems in your yard. Bugs need them for shelter! That’s not to say you can’t tidy up: rake leaves into garden beds, around trees, or just in a pile out of the way. All we ask is that you #LeaveTheLeaves! 🍂🐝 xerces.org/blog/leave-t...

Leave the Leaves!
One of the most valuable ways to support pollinators and other invertebrates is to provide them with the shelter they need to survive the winter. Thankfully, all you need to do is do less yard work.

Schools are not a business and a student is not a customer and this is the framing that encapsulates everything wrong with higher education. The “solution” of running universities like businesses rather than a public good was always the problem.

Refusing to use AI isn’t a recalcitrant position. It’s the moral one. There is too much wrong with how this is happening to just “if you can’t beat em join em” this. It’s a lack of consent machine. An environmental destruction machine. An emotional and cognitive numbing machine.
