The Cat in the Hat was NOT on my 2026 education bingo card. We’re worried about kids using AI to write essays. Meanwhile, they can create convincing content in seconds and share it with thousands. Maybe the AI conversation isn’t really about the essay.

On International Literacy Day, a reminder of why this work matters so much. Reading opens up stories, information, ideas, opportunities, and the ability to decide for yourself what you think about all of it. Every kid deserves to be a reader.

Apparently, this week I’m stuck on all things Dolly. A career is what you build. A legacy is what keeps going without you. Millions of kids will keep getting books because Dolly decided that mattered. That’s a legacy.

Sometimes the most important thing a leader can say is, “I messed up.” Or even, “Yeah, this situation is messed up.” You don’t have to complain about it forever, but pretending everything is fine when the room is clearly on fire doesn’t help anyone. Acknowledge it. Then figure out what’s next.
Graphic with a navy background and white and hot pink text reading, “Sometimes leadership starts with acknowledging what everyone already knows.” The word “acknowledging” is highlighted in hot pink, with the Brooke Powers logo at the bottom.

Ever notice how much of what we think teaching should look like comes from movies instead of classrooms? That question sent me down a rabbit hole...and eventually became my newest presentation. Can't wait to share Hollywood vs. the Classroom at #OURHIVE and then #NCTM #NCTE in August. 🎬🍿

The Olympics don’t need to be a theme to matter in math class. They can be context. Elapsed time, changing quantities, score comparisons, and real moments students already care about. I shared a few classroom examples from Humanizing Mathematics PreK–5 here: www.openupresources.org/resource/whe...
