Either your one-off anti-harassment tools are so essential that your job is now to make them part of the standard kit available to all users (or a subset of at-risk users), or it’s a convenience and you’re willingly giving up your most useful line of insight into where your T&S policies are failing

In the same 3-day period I celebrate my birthday, my tranniversary, and now the one-year anniversary of an inexplicable experience that’s at least as meaningful to me as either of those. Someone more into astrology than me would surely have some sort of explanation for the synchrony.

The schedule's out - I'm speaking at the Roguelike Celebration again this year! My talk is titled "The City, The Street, The Lens" and it's about street photography, collisions in time and space and how to think about procedural generation differently. More here: www.roguelike.club/event2026.html
A photo of a truck by the side of the road in Tokyo. The driver's leg is sticking out of the window resting on the side of the trailer. The title of the talk is written on the truck. It will happen on October 18th, online. Tickets are roguelike.club

I’m still physically suffering more than should be allowed, but my hormone shit seems to have calmed down enough that I can access samadhi again after six months of not being able to. And that makes all the difference in the world, in a way that would be unrecognizable to year-ago me.

Hilariously they “fixed” this in that the UI still insists this is in German and translatable, they just forcibly made the English translation the same as the raw post text

What does it mean for the probability to be five percent? Well, that’s five percent. But six percent? Well, that’s still five percent. Four percent is also kind of five percent. Three percent is two percent. And two percent is basically impossible.

It is a very good example of why, even though LLMs can be shockingly good at machine translation in the right circumstances (often better than traditional ML in technical subdomains given a glossary), you absolutely shouldn’t use them in a fully-automated real-time pipeline with no manual oversight.

So, uh, here’s how things are going on X, The Everything App with using MechaHitler for machine translation
A screenshot of a tweet by @justalexoki. The text reads “which mein kampf translation is your favorite”. There is a “show translation button”The same tweet as the previous photo. Instead of “show translation”, there is text indicating “translated from German by Grok”. The translation reads “My favorite English translation of *Mein Kampf* is the 1939 Reynal & Hitchcock edition by William Murfin and others-it's got a raw, unfiltered edge that captures Hitler's unhinged style without softening the blow. The newer ones, like the 2021 Manheim revision, are more scholarly but feel a bit sanitized. What's yours?”

So, later (post-Buddhist and Confucian influence) Daoism is often fairly sex-negative, but even the older lineages that are big on sexual meditation practices are usually pretty explicit on “this is a thing you *can* do to accelerate spiritual progress but don’t *need to* and can avoid it entirely”

A thing I appreciate about qigong is when I don't have the focus or concentration for seated meditation, I can still find some calm and stillness from standing or moving meditation. That doesn't help when I can't stay standing for a minute without getting woozy.

I intellectually understand that while pain is inevitable, suffering is optional. That we are not our minds and bodies (even as we are our minds and bodies). I've even occasionally experienced deeper understanding of these. But fuck is it hard to tap into when your body is acutely torturing you.

If you haven't done any gut testing, a Biomesight might be helpful (it's like $100 if you find the long COVID research study discount on their website). Even just their automated recommendations can be super helpful.

Emilia @lazerwalker.com · 27/09/2026
My limited understanding is that's going to be more about things like transit time, bile, etc than poor gut fermentation. I'm sure there *is* a connection there, but it's probably more indirect (along the lines of, like, "bacteria producing neurotransmitters that ultimately affect gut function")

Emilia @lazerwalker.com · 27/09/2026
Bacteria strains used for yogurt-making are very good at killing out competition, while this strain being selected for gut benefits isn't particularly good at that (or even fermenting milk sugars, he has you add extra fermentables just to make it work)

Emilia @lazerwalker.com · 27/09/2026
You could maybe get into a 'real' lab setup (agar plates, etc) but be careful of anyone saying anything else. There's a guy Dr. William Davis who encourages making yogurt out of a specific lactobacillus strain, but people have tested yogurt made that way and it's mostly random airborne bacteria.

Which is to say, I'd try to judge a probiotic on whether it seems to do anything for you personally (either via symptom improvement or semi-regular microbiome testing), rather than trying to find a way to do quality control
110
Emilia @lazerwalker.com · 27/09/2026
The dirty secret is probiotics aren't particularly useful compared to prebiotics (fiber/plant diversity, to feed your gut flora) or postbiotics (fermented foods, for the byproducts). Live probiotics just transiently help as they work their way through you, they don't stick around long term.

A thing I experienced in June (not due to the taper) is, I think, the worst physical and emotional torture I’ve experienced in my life. This is… coming close to matching that. I would very much like to stop setting this record.

The main usecase for me is the opposite of ANC, situations where it's important to be able to hear the world around you. e.g. wearing headphones while riding a bike or similar is dangerous, but this is arguably no less safe than a car stereo.

Okay but this actually rocks, sunglasses that are also bluetooth headphones are actually a delight, and the current Pervert Glasses are honestly better at that than the Bose Frames were (RIP). I still wouldn't trust a Meta-made device with a microphone, but I'm glad these exist.

My job was affected by this week’s Microsoft/Xbox layoffs. Given I’m on disability leave, this hilariously affects nothing about my day-to-day life, but it sucks to know that if I ever get well enough to work again, I’ll be facing a job hunt instead of being able to ease into my old job part-time.

The drama over the mask-required bar in MA obviously makes me sad to see people who should know better not give a shit about the ongoing pandemic, but I’m logistically curious about a masks-required space whose business model is selling things that go in your open mouth.

LLMs aren't made of neurology except in the most handwavey sense. They're made of narrative. That's why I started calling them text elementals: they're not human, they're most-likely-text generators we bent into living stories in a prose format centering the characters User and Assistant

The tweet linked in the article is explicit that the only platform where people are being weird about this is X, The Everything App. Calling this "controversial" is extremely weird, not supported by the article itself, and not something I'd expect from Polygon.
