True, and thanks. I thought “above” since it is “tu vois[…]venir à toi, montant l’escalier”, but maybe it’s reading too much into the dynamic there. Hugo sure likes the older ladies though, which I guess is a welcome change from all the “jeune fille en fleur” poetry of the time.

It just sounds a little off for Hugo to be “Lover” when it’s originally amour, Love personified. My scansion is probably way off, but could the last two lines be something closer to: “Climbing the stairs to join you above/The schoolmaster, Boredom, and the student, Love.” ?

"Reversion clause" is a phrase a lot of new writers submitting to small presses don't know, and if that's you, rectify that ASAP and make sure you always have one in your contracts. And yes, you should ALWAYS have a contract.
