Thanks! I considered idos method, yes but I didn't want to make standard curves for all my phages if I could help it 😛 Especially since they're temperate

hello #phage pholks, any of you already have a protocol for high-through put one-step growth curves? Making any step faster/more convenient is welcome. Thanks!!! Spotting on a big agar plate doesn't save as much time as we lose by reducing the precision/least count and then having to repeat it 😅

Definitely motivation to write this paper up, right @ccwendling.bsky.social ? X) Was a very fun #phage conference, plus visiting the Harnack-Haus again added to the fun. It's the best place in Germany for a conference in my opinion! Thanks SPP organisers <3

Avery built an ML framework which can predict strain-level phage-host interactions from genome data alone, trained on public phage susceptibility datasets. Model performance matches existing species-specific models, can generalize to unseen phages and hosts, and guide phage-cocktail design.

TIL you can pause reviews for a while on the reviewer dashboard! Earlier reviews will still be active for revisions etc. 😄 Since I've always tried to review in an encouraging tone + list solutions for each of my criticisms, it takes up a lot of effort and time Is it better than refusing to review?🤔

Today I'm feeling thankful for all the people in my life who accept, "I replied in my head" as a valid true phenomenon. Some also say, "it's okay, I do that too." So many emails. This function was missed for ~50y b/c T7 biology was mainly explored in lab strains w/ few defenses. Our infection assays in natural isolates show strong phenotypes for T7K; it allows T7 to infect strains that carry diverse systems but share no common one, through a brute-force deactivation strategy

Happy that this is out! Pyocyanin produced by Pseudomonas aeruginosa promotes antibiotic resistance evolution in enterococci.
journals.asm.org
Pyocyanin produced by Pseudomonas aeruginosa creates legacy effects that promote antibiotic resistance evolution in enterococci | Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy
Bacterial infections may consist of different species that together form a polymicrobial community, as is the case in urinary tract infections (UTIs) (1–3). The response to antibiotic treatment of such polymicrobial infections may be affected by metabolic interactions among community members that affect the survival and resistance evolution of specific members (4–7). For example, β-lactamase-producing strains may cross-protect community members against β-lactams (8, 9), and antibiotic-resistant Escherichia coli strains producing the signal molecule indole may induce antibiotic tolerance via enhanced efflux in susceptible bacteria (10). Previous research of polymicrobial UTIs has shown that interactions between UTI members can alter the growth, antibiotic tolerance, and evolvability of antibiotic resistance of other community members (7, 11, 12). Yet, the nature of interactions affecting the evolvability of antibiotic resistance is often unknown.
