One of the things I know about writing is this: spend it all, shoot it, play it, lose it, all, right away, every time. Do not hoard what seems good for a later place in the book or for another book; give it, give it all, give it now. The impulse to save something good for a better place later is the signal to spend it now. Something more will arise for later, something better. These things fill from behind, from beneath, like well water. Similarly, the impulse to keep to yourself what you have learned is not only shameful, it is destructive. Anything you do not give freely and abundantly becomes lost to you. You open your safe and find ashes.

I suppose I'm not a "natural" writer or a genius at it. But I love writing and telling stories. So, so much. Even if I don't manage it everyday, that never changes. Confident or not, inspired or not, I am a writer. I really, truly am.

I do write. Some fanfiction, some original. All for myself. I don't know how much more skilled I am than bavk then, but the little confidence I have has been hard-won. I have to work on it all the time.

I've taken some small workshops since, nothing much. I hold bitter envy for those who had inspiring teachers, who lifted them up and filled them with confidence (even if they weren't kind).

She didn't enlighten me, or teach me hard lessons. She told me I was untalented and only grudgingly offered any help. I was so mortified. I wanted to be good. I had thought I *was* good. I love stories so much, to be told I was bad at writing them killed a part of my soul.

The only real class I ever took was in high school, wherein the teacher ripped my work apart and forced me to claw my way to a passing grade. It remains one of the most painful experiences of my schooling.

I never did take a proper writing class, the kind with a talented writer leading the class, who is both a figurehead and inspiration. I never managed to carve out the time, never went to a prestigious enough school to attract that kind of writer to teach.
