Had my PhD viva yesterday and somehow came out the other side having passed with no corrections 🎓 Several years of Mau Mau, colonial violence, photography, archives, footnotes and general academic spiralling later… apparently I’m Dr Brown now. Still processing that one.

Reminder to back up your stuff - my laptop stopped working last week and I had not backed up my thesis edits and redrafts for two weeks... Safe to say it's a mistake I'll never make again... I've fallen for the rage-bait - Elstein’s review of @davidolusoga.bsky.social's Empire. What’s striking is how closely his piece mirrors the flaws he accuses the documentary of - selective framing, inaccuracies & refusal to engage with the complexity of Mau Mau.

Love that during the Mau Mau rebellion the colonial government’s warning signs were less “war zone” and more “your picnic might be disrupted by terrorists.” A very settler-colonial kind of danger.

57 years ago, on March 16, 1968, US troops killed 504 Vietnamese civilians - mostly older people, mothers, and children. I am spending the day at the My Lai memorial with Ron Haeberle, the photographer, and got to meet the last of the survivors, of whom just a handful are still alive.
