During the big waves of privatisation in the 1980s and 1990s, the debate was framed around who can manage production more efficiently, the state or capital. Everyone bought into this frame and we forgot the more important question, which is who gets to decide what is produced, and for whose benefit.

The myth of the immigrant freeloader is a wizened one. It isn't the sole purview of the Alberta Premier. But it's a myth. Migrants give more than they get. And just as with citizens, where they do need services, it's cheaper to provide them early.
