Practice on me:

Dev continues, saying, “Anyway, he insinuated you need more practice, so I wanted to offer myself as a test dummy.”
I blink. “Huh?”
He sits on the mattress again and pats his chest. “Practice on me. Just don’t view anything too embarrassing, like me on the toilet.”
I snort and shake my head. “For real? You’re okay with my invading your mind?”
He shrugs. “Yeah. The sooner you learn to control it, the less it’ll happen by accident.”
I pinch my bottom lip. He’s right, and I need to practice, but I never imagined he would offer to help. “I don’t know how to pick specific memories yet, but I’ll do my best to avoid anything awkward.”
“Sounds good.” He gestures to the comforter with an open palm.
I sit, hunched over, and blow out a shaky breath. I have no idea how to activate my abilities, let alone select a particular memory. This could be a complete failure, but perhaps that would be better than viewing something hurtful or embarrassing.
Dev holds out his forearms. “I trust you. Go for it.”

Smuggling Shenanigans:

A dimensional rift occupies the floor, like the one at the military outpost, shimmering and oscillating in the dim lighting. I inhale sharply as Braun’s team dumps the crates into the chasm before leaping inside themselves.
Heart racing, I peer sidewise at Slyke, who grins.
He says, “Try not to scream.”
He hooks his elbow around my neck and shoulders, and jumps.

Brothel Shenanigans:

“Faine is right. I wasn’t planning to stay,” Dev says.
Marius hooks his elbow around Dev’s shoulders, pulling him closer, the gesture seizing my insides. “Then come to my office. Have a drink. Let’s chat while Faine is serviced.” He motions something to the sex workers, directing them.
I need to get Dev out of here. Fast. I reach for him, but the blonde woman catches my wrist, kissing my fingers.
“Are any of us to your liking?” she asks, pointing to herself and her associates.
(REDACTED)
I peer at Dev, who returns my gaze. He gives me a weak nod, as if to reassure me he’ll be okay with Marius, their proximity hitching my breath.
“Stay!” I blurt out.
Marius quirks a brow. “Huh?”
“Talk here. Not your office,” I say, my voice shaky.

Transdimensional War:

I grab his hand. “Come on! We need to go.”
“I can stop them,” Dev says, as if he were realizing it himself. He looks me directly in the eye, and squeezes my fingers, his tone assertive. “I can stop them.”
My heartbeat throbs in my eardrums, my chest tingling. He means it, and he’s more than capable, but there are too many variables. He doesn’t understand his (REDACTED) yet, and hasn’t had time to practice; a battleground with live ammunition isn’t the place to learn.
I whisper, “Dev, please—”
More Karthals spill from the rift, their jets whirling in the sky.

Character Introduction:

My gaze darts around the room, my body immobile. Artwork plasters the walls, from elaborate portraits and scenery, to hundreds of strange symbols, matching those on the brothel’s entrance.

A small woman skids down a ladder, skipping the rungs, with a paintbrush handle in her mouth. She drops her supplies on a wheeled cart and wipes glittery orange dye on her romper, her height and build reminiscent of my sister. My breaths soften at the thought.

She says, “Welcome! My name is Rin. I’m your resident tattoo artist.”

She snatches a hair tie from her wrist and secures her ebony hair in two lopsided buns.

Excerpt (Continued):

A tall, broad-shouldered man enters the room, his tattoos obscured by his dark complexion. He pulls a white handkerchief with green embroidery from the pocket of his sweatshirt, his hands protected by fingerless tactical gloves, and dabs sweat from Rin’s brow. They kiss.

“This is my fiancé Nalo,” Rin tells me, her smile exuberant, “our resident healer.”

Nalo drags his hands across his shaven head and nods in greeting.

How did I choose the title?
Subheadings: New Adult Science Fantasy w/ Romance. Represented by FinePrint Literary Management.

The title of this book holds two meanings.

On the surface, THE CROOKED JACKAL is the name of a brothel, which serves as headquarters for a mafia subgroup.

On a deeper level, THE CROOKED JACKAL takes on new meaning toward the end of the book, the details of which I won’t spoil.

Our justice system is a joke.

I recline in bed as my least favorite prison guard, Geb Fathi, jangles his keys against my cell bars, with his beer belly puckering the buttons of his uniform. A wicked grin curves his lips, bristling the hairs on the back of my neck.

He says, “Big day, huh? I’ll miss you, Faine.”

I flash him an equally twisted smile. “The feeling isn’t mutual.”

Excerpt (Continued):

We approach the end of the cell block, where an unlit staircase and bathroom loom behind a long, curved desk. Military personnel file paperwork into the drawers.

A middle-aged man with a shaven head glances at us, his gaunt face shriveling further at the sight of me. He opens a thick binder and crosses out my name.

“Jericho Jr. Black. You’re free to—”

“Faine,” I correct him.

“Jericho Jr. ‘Faine’ Black,” he says with an exaggerated eye roll.

Character Introduction:

The flower shop’s glass veranda glints. Orbs of light fall on the neighboring alley, where a man scrapes his switchblade across the library’s exterior, carving something into the bricks. He folds a white jacket over his arm, with the sleeves of his shirt rolled up. Beautiful tattoos stretch from the tips of his fingers to his neck, complementing his dark complexion.

My boots scuff the asphalt when I halt.

His head turns. A strip of wavy brown hair lines the center of his skull, the sides of his head shaven. He glances at me, then does a double-take. His dark brown eyes widen, lips parted, like he’s seen a ghost, but then he smirks and straightens.

Excerpt (Continued):

His voice lilts, accentuating his vowels. “Can I help you?”

I laugh. “Nope. Definitely not.”

“Friends call me Marius,” he says, his tone melodious. He deposits his switchblade into his breast pocket, drawing my gaze to his wrist, where a familiar hook-like tattoo resides, the same as Slyke. “And your name?”

I rest my fingers on the collar of my coat in case I need to rip apart the buttons and snatch my knives. “Doesn’t matter. Whatever you’re selling, I’m not interested.”

Standing across the street is Devlin Moore, my best friend since childhood, the only person I would face imprisonment to protect. His skin is a darker brown than mine, with dirty blonde curls and hazel eyes, a striking combination.

Warmth prickles my spine the longer I gape at him, my heartbeat erratic. He limps in my direction, his gentle smile warped by a long, thin scar, from the corner of his mouth across the left side of his face.

Devlin wraps his arms around me, pulling me into a hug, and I flinch.

“It’s g-good to see you.” He pushes me back and looks me over. He’s at least a foot taller than me, despite his slouched posture.

I breathe in his citrusy scent, reminiscent of home, and sigh. My parents were supposed to pick me up, so there must’ve been a change of plans, not that I mind. Dev is better company.

“What’re you doing here?” I ask, resting my hands in my pockets.
