Eamonn McCann is always razor sharp in his analysis of the North. Garvagh road is not a difference between ‘two communities’ that needs ‘both sides’ understood. It only benefits the DUP and hardline loyalists to force us to revisit a terrible time in the North. rebelnews.ie/2026/10/02/g...

I’ve had this discussion with their supporters before - about their right to delimit membership to Protestants - and the lack of recognition that it makes them a sectarian organization just blows my mind. And the fact they do this while being an overtly political body is just wild in a democracy.

RTÉ and its bothsideism and neutral language of ‘compromise’ show the same detachment, lack of understanding and disregard for the ongoing trauma in places like Garvagh as the BBC.

Anyone with a semblance of knowledge about NI knows the significance of this march and the unpardonable harm it has done to this community. That residents were forced to block roads to protect themselves from state apparatus designed to protect the state and its status quo has long precedent.

Across the political divide do WM govts specifically look for people who know nothing about NI and are tone death to its history to hold the position of SoS? Because they’re amazingly consistent if they aren’t trying.

I feel extremely angry that the morally bankrupt likes of Jamie Bryson and Carla Lockhart think they have the right to force a fraternal group down a road they don’t come from, aren’t wanted in, and have a long history of terrorizing. What an advertisement for their rotten, broken union.

Laura McAtackney @lauramca.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
How desperate are the DUP to try - 28 years later - to refight a battle that even they should have consigned to history? Drumcree was one of those awful times that it is extremely triggering for all of us to have to revisit. It can benefit no one, least of all unionism, to do that.
1516
Laura McAtackney @lauramca.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
Drumcree was not just a ‘march’ it was an annual extended period of fear that threatened to destabilize the entire province and resulted in a significant number of deaths. No one should forget that the catalyst for the march being halted was the deaths of the Quinn boys in their firebombed home.

Laura McAtackney @lauramca.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
For people of my age (old) and my background (CNR) who grew up in NI during the 90s, Drumcree was the nadir of community relation & differences in our perceptions of ‘rights’. We just could not conceive how a group of snarling, angry men thought their ‘right to march’ surpassed our ‘right to exist’.

Oh i know, it’s not quite as strongly articulated - and generally not by people who are ethnic minorities - but it’s a brain disease to believe such things.

Laura McAtackney @lauramca.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
(1) Ethnicity is shared cultural traits not shared biological DNA. (2) how does having deep ancestral connections to modern day Germany make someone ‘English’? (3) how many people in England do you think have exclusive DNA links to German prehistorical origins? Probably none. Dressed up racism.
