Francis Fukuyama’s Failures of Imagination
As he looks back on a life in ideas, he is able to see the flaws in his system. But he cannot take seriously the type of politics that might address them.

The common argument that "well they'll have to do this in their jobs! when they grow up!!" is bs. They'll have to do a lot of risky things when they grow up but that doesn't mean they need to do it right now. And waiting for now doesn't mean they won't learn when the time is right.

Using AI should probably be treated like using very sharp knives or operating a vehicle. Something kids will grow up to do, but really have no business trying until their brains have developed www.wsj.com/tech/ai/goog...

Technology being everywhere doesn’t mean it belongs everywhere. The tech industry wants us to believe that AI in early education is not only inevitable, but necessary. We don't see it that way. This week, we announced a moratorium on generative AI for public school students in 2-K to 8th grade.
We’re eliminating AI use for students in 2-K through 8th grade for the upcoming school year.

I think one reason Mamdani is using non-traditional media is because traditional media isn't covering substantive government stories The two reporters on this topic cover the Mamdani administration but mostly from the perspective of conflicts. Too much theater, not enough substance.

Publishers defend stuff like this as a worthwhile dice roll or "It seemed like a good idea at the time" when in fact "MrBeast has millions of fans and none of them have ever read a book, and no James Patterson reader knows who MrBeast is" was actually a pretty easy thing to foresee.

The best music writing helps us hear the songs differently, learn about the artist in a way we didn't expect, and know ourselves and our culture a little better. Dangit if this piece by @natalieweiner.bsky.social doesn't crush it on all three: newrepublic.com/article/2147...

Yikes. Women accounted for all of the job losses and all of the labor force decline in July, according to @nwlc.org
WASHINGTON — Women accounted for 100 percent of the decline in the labor force in July, according to a National Women’s Law Center jobs analysis of monthly data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That brings the total net number of women who have left the labor force since January this year to 845,000. In comparison, there are 406,000 fewer men in the labor force now than in January.

A total of 165,000 women, aged 20 and over, left the labor force last month — meaning they are neither working nor looking for work — while men's labor force participation was unchanged. Overall, the economy lost 23,000 jobs in July. Women accounted for all of these losses, losing 32,000 jobs, while men gained 9,000 jobs. Women make up 50.1% of the workforce.

In a call with investors on Thursday, News Corp ceo Robert Thomson, described the firm as "an AI inputs company, and that fact was reflected in our recent deal with Meta, which complements our partnership with OpenAI." This could be an opportunity for Harper Collins, he said.

"Editorial is an absolutely essential input," he said. "AI engines require information, and they need constant updates to remain relevant."
