1/2 Quiet morning writing about Lima, momentarily interrupted by a rabbit hole. A bas-relief chiselled by Giovanni Bellini (also known as Juan Antonio de Padua, about whom little is known) of the Council of the Indies, made in 1748 for the new royal palace in Madrid.
A white marble bas-relief with men sitting across an oblong L-shaped table and encircled by allegories of the Ocean and representations of Mercury and others.

2/2 The relief is part of a series that includes representations of other Councils, battles, allegories and more. Of the 44 pieces commissioned, 33 are in the collection. Fascinating. The full series, including the Council of the Indies above, is found here: www.museodelprado.es/museo/public...

REF2021 obsessed about interdisciplinary outputs; REF2029 has shifted to a fixation with non-traditional outputs. Meanwhile, the damning data from REF2021 re Black researchers is persistently ignored: 2021.ref.ac.uk/publications...

We say we value diverse research, but can we assess it?
Research outputs come in all shapes and sizes, and the REF process acknowledges. But, as Ola Thomson and Gemma Derrick's research demonstrates, we're still not clear how non-traditional outputs can be fairly and consistently assessed
