Sensing your body (‘Interoception’) is everywhere in theories of mental health. But when we tested how well hundreds of people sensed their heart and lungs, the link to symptoms was almost nowhere to be found. 💣 🚨New @natmentalhealth.nature.com paper 🚨🎉 asks why 🧵 www.nature.com/articles/s44...

New paper out in J. Neuro! We used MEG and pattern classifiers to ask: if a memory is reactivated in the brain, does that mean you'll recall it? Short answer: no. www.jneurosci.org/content/46/1... Read on for the details! [1/7] #neuroscience #memory

Alpha Oscillations Track the Projection of Reactivated Memories into Conscious Awareness
By definition, episodic memory is a conscious phenomenon. Memory traces reactivated by the hippocampus and reinstated in the sensory cortices need to enter conscious awareness for them to be re-experi...

What drives #dissociation? In a study of adults with #PTSD (some with #DID), extreme negative beliefs like “there’s something wrong with me as a person” were linked to dissociation. When these beliefs decreased during treatment, so did dissociation. Free publication access: tinyurl.com/5n7f4hke

Is interoceptive sensing unified across internal organs? 🫀🫁 Our high-powered psychophysical study (N=241) suggests not. Bayesian evidence indicates interoceptive processes are largely modality-specific—challenging the idea of a unitary interoceptive sense. 🔗 Read here: osf.io/preprints/ps...

Another EXCELLENT paper about exposure. But this supports my claim that we have to study recommendations that come from basic science and often we don't find they improve outcomes... www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

New from us: People with delusions sometimes feel that the world is unreal. Here, we explain this in terms of prediction errors, with Kamin blocking behavioral and computational data from patients, psychics, and controls www.biologicalpsychiatrycnni.org/article/S245...

Delusional Unreality and Predictive Processing
Phenomenological psychopathologists have recently highlighted how people with delusions experience multiple realities (delusional and non-delusional) and have suggested this double bookkeeping cannot be explained via predictive processing. Here, we present data from Kamin blocking and extinction learning that show how predictive processing might, in principle, explain a pervasive sense of dual reality.
