Wir verlieren nicht die Leser, sondern die Statuskäufer.
Muss man sich Kunst erarbeiten? Muss man leiden beim Kunstgenuss? 
Diese Vorstellung ist ein wichtiger Aspekt des Kunstparadigmas, das eine Art ästhetischer Selbstverleugnung einfordert. Ich zitiere in meinem Buch einen Kritiker, der bei Tarkowskis „Solaris“ vor Langeweile eingeschlafen ist, und danach trotzdem behauptete, der Film sei großartig. Große Kunst ist demnach etwas, was die Rezipient:innen leiden und arbeiten lässt. So entgeht man dem Vorwurf der frivolen Zeitverschwendung. Die heroische Selbsterzählung der modernen Kunst besagt: Wenn Kunst zur Arbeit wird, verschwendet man bei der Rezeption nicht seine Zeit.  Das aber mehr und mehr infrage gestellt wird.  
Ja, es gibt ein hedonistisches Paradigma, das von der Kunst vor allem Unterhaltung fordert. Diese Haltung ist oft feindselig gegenüber der Hochkultur, bis hin zu einem ästhetischen Populismus, der das Kunstparadigma lautstark ablehnt. Das ist eine Entwicklung, die man ernst nehmen muss. In den letzten zehn Jahren wurde zum Beispiel immer wieder beklagt, man verliere die anspruchsvollen Leser:innen, weil alle nur noch Romantasy und New Adult lesen.Das Problem scheint mir aber woanders zu liegen. Menschen haben schon immer zum Spaß gelesen. Was verloren gegangen ist, sind nicht die Hochliteraturleser, sondern die Statuskäufer. Menschen kaufen vermehrt nur noch die Bücher, die sie auch wirklich lesen. Das hängt eng zusammen mit dem Verschwinden des klassischen Bildungsbürgertums und dessen Selbsterzählung: Ich kaufe das, weil ich es irgendwann lesen werde. Das ist für den Buchmarkt natürlich trotzdem schlecht, verkompliziert aber die klassischen Niedergangsdiagnosen der Kulturkritik.
