Además algunos sufren todo tipo de discriminaciones: explotados en los trabajos, la inaccesibilidad a una vivienda digna, dificultades de adaptación de los hijos en el ámbito escolar, ese sentimiento de sufrimiento-nostalgia- se incrementa todavía más. Por si no fuera ya bastante, si además con la imposición de un discurso racista desde determinadas fuerzas políticas, a las que cada vez las apoyan más electoralmente, ese sufrimiento-nostalgia- tiene que alcanzar un nivel insoportable.

La nostalgia no solo es efecto del desplazamiento, como acabo de mostrar. También es el resultado de cómo son acogidos en el nuevo país. En un estudio comparativo sobre Nueva York, Barcelona y Paris, el sociólogo de origen mejicano y profesor de la American University, en Washington, Ernesto Castañeda ha sugerido que los inmigrantes tienen diferentes sentimientos de pertenencia o extranjería según la disposición espacial y la política de la ciudad donde viven. El factor más importante es la economía, es decir, la necesidad de los inmigrantes para su economía. Cuanto más necesarios sean, más probable es que se sientan como en casa. Y cuanto más se reconozca su presencia cultural, con desfiles anuales y centros culturales, más se sienten en casa.

Castañeda señala: “Las tasas de empleo, la participación política, la posibilidad de participar en actividades culturales, el estatus legal y las relaciones con personas de diversos orígenes se combinan para integrar a los inmigrantes. Para estos, el sentimiento de pertenencia es un indicador de las políticas que se esfuerzan por crear un entorno acogedor que maximice la contribución de los inmigrantes a sus nuevas ciudades”.
Según Castañeda, los inmigrantes se sienten mucho más a gusto en Nueva York que en Barcelona, y más a gusto en Barcelona que en Paris. La capital francesa es la ciudad donde los inmigrantes encuentran más dificultades para sentirse como en casa, como consecuencia la cultura republicana homogénea fomentada por Francia.
