jex thomas @lastpinepress.com · 8mThe idea that universities should be run like businesses has been so deleterious to higher education. Of course the fuckers who insist we run in that way want to actually dismantle it, so 130
jex thomas @lastpinepress.com · 8hWay back when I worked in the finishing room of a plastics factory doing QC, I taught myself to fall asleep while the parts would pile up, wake up to check them all, then fall back asleep 000
jex thomas @lastpinepress.com · 10hYeah I think we're talking about this at cross purposes a little and it's a bunch of individual sliders not just an overall binary so probably not a useful framing. 010
jex thomas @lastpinepress.com · 10hPbtA is geared toward partial hits being the most common result, while in FitD, there's an equal chance of hits and misses, and full hits are only a one in six chance 130
jex thomas @lastpinepress.com · 10hI mean yes competent scoundrels but definitely not fewer consequences 120
jex thomas @lastpinepress.com · 10hSure, and in PbtA the GM is always presenting a situation that the players respond and while that is how FitD starts, in most games it increasingly becomes the players presenting the situations. But this might be a different level than what you're talking about 120
jex thomas @lastpinepress.com · 10hInteresting, yeah! I think there's a talk from the Bakers about some of this and I think they were talking about focusing on verbs (moves) but it's obviously more nuanced than that. 010
jex thomas @lastpinepress.com · 10hKind of? Like I think consequences are often much harder, but there are more mechanisms to offset that, like you say. PbtA is more GM-driven and FitD more player-driven. 140
jex thomas @lastpinepress.com · 11hI think part of this is trad games uses nouns to resolve things, pbta uses verbs, and fitd uses adverbs (even if the actions aren't actually presented as adverbs) e.g. I take a risk in the manner of ... choosing an action tells you how you approach a specific verb (general move, e.g. AUF/DD) 210
jex thomas @lastpinepress.com · 11hI'm curious about your thoughts on the Action Roll, which is building a whole game around Act Under Fire/Defy Danger 120
Reposted by jex thomasTheDevinTeam @thedevteam.itch.io · 22hI think a big problem is that players (and designers) look at the generic “do something” moves and think, “Oh this move does everything I need!” And, like, no they don’t. Your PBTA game needs specificity. Those generic moves should be used rarely and only in situations where the stakes are obvious. 3572
