UK coastguard agency chief faces calls to resign over use of unverified data to back up pay plan
Regulator says poll cited by Virginia McVea in move to strip rescue officers of pay did not sufficiently back up her claim The head of the UK coastguard agency is facing calls to resign after she was found to have used unverified data to back up her controversial plan to strip rescue officers of their pay. Virginia McVea, the chief executive of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), claimed more than 90% of coastguard rescue officers supported the proposal, citing an official survey. Now, after an Office for Statistics Regulation (OSR) investigation, the agency has admitted its poll did not sufficiently back up the claim. Continue reading...

Well done Zack for running an exemplary campaign despite the dirty tricks campaign by Labour. Sagel will need to up her efforts considerably given the feedback she's received as Camden councils Leader. She first needs to learn to turn up and not run difficult questions.

George Galloway contests London byelection without setting foot in UK
Veteran leftwinger has been ‘in exile in the east’ in Russia and not been to Holborn and St Pancras constituency since campaign began George Galloway has been elected seven times to parliament, but his attempt to succeed for an eighth this week, in the London seat formerly held by Keir Starmer, is undoubtedly his most curious effort yet. Since the byelection campaign began, the leader of the Workers party of Britain has yet to set foot in the UK, let alone the Holborn and St Pancras constituency, because he is in what he describes as “self-exile” after being questioned by counter-terrorism police at Gatwick airport a year ago. An update on sponsors pulling out of #Disinfo2026 at the last minute. Michael Shellenberger has followed up his earlier email to panelists participating in the event with another email, that include the following statements:
Since then the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs wrote to me: "Upon becoming aware of the above-mentioned discussion topics, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania withdrew from any participation in the conference. The Ministry has also formally dissociated itself from the conference content and requested that the organisers remove all references to the Ministry from conference materials, communications, and promotional activities."
Andrius Katinas of the Radio and Television
Commission of Lithuania wrote to me that he has withdrawn as a speaker "in light of the differences of opinion that have arisen with the organisers of the
'Disinfo 2026' conference regarding the assessment of the role of the United States."

Two panels at the #Disinfo2026 conference seem to have particularly upset the MAGA people. It would be a shame if people weren’t aware of them.
Day 1, October 7, 11:45 - 12:30
Under attack: How the counter-disinformation community is dealing with US government pressure
#solutions
room: Zeta
Panel
On 23 December 2025, the US government (USG) imposed travel bans and deportation orders on five European figures - former EU Commissioner Thierry Breton, Imran Ahmed, Clare Melford, Anna-Lena von
Hodenberg, and Josephine Ballon - accusing them of censoring US social media platforms.
The use of legal intimidation to wage personal attacks raises its own free-speech concerns as well as questions about the appropriate use of legal punishment in a policy debate. The United States Government's attacks to intimidate individuals and organisations are an unprecedented escalation in defense of US corporations seeking to avoid regulation and criticism. This panel will examine the chilling effect these tactics can potentially have on the community of researchers, journalists, and former government officials who fight disinformation, propaganda and hate speech online. The panel will also discuss how some are fighting back against these tactics.
Speakers:
Claire Pershan, Coalition for Independent Technology Research
Josephine Ballon, HateAid
Chair:
Gregory Rohde, EU DisinfoLabDay 1, October 7, 10:45 - 11:45
USA as a FIMI threat: acknowledge, adapt, push back #infospaces
room: Alfa
Presentations
This session addresses one of the most uncomfortable questions in the counter-disinformation field today: how did the United States become a FIMI threat for Europe? The session will explore how the counters disinformation community rebuilds resilience without Washington, what solidarity looks like in a fractured transatlantic environment, and how to push back against on these operations.
Speakers:
Adam Fivenson, Center for Security, Innovation & New Technology at American University Alex Finley, Former officer of CIA's Directorate of Operations, Centre for Strategic Advantage Emerson Brooking, Nonresident Senior Fellow, DFRLab
Chair:
Carlos Hernández-Echevarría, Fundación Maldita.es
