Vincent Van Gogh "Starry Night Over the Rhone" (September 1888) oil on canvas | 72.5 × 92 cm (28.5 × 36.2 in). Musée d'Orsay, Paris, France #ArtSky #VanGogh
"Starry Night Over the Rhône" painted by Dutch Post-Impressionist artist Vincent van Gogh in September 1888.
The famous oil-on-canvas painting captures a nocturnal view of the Rhône River in Arles, France, featuring gas reflections on the water and a couple walking in the foreground.
The original masterpiece is housed in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, France.

Key Features

The Setting: Painted at night under a gas lamp, it captures the intense reflection of artificial golden town lights across the royal blue water of the river.

The Figures: In the bottom right foreground, a strolling couple walks along the banks of the river.

Connection to "The Starry Night": This piece is a predecessor to his even more famous June 1889 canvas, The Starry Night, which he painted later while staying at an asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence.

satin ribbons

After unexpectedly winning her first blue ribbon for a sewn cape in 1981, Carol St. Clair Johnson developed an enduring love for the New Mexico State Fair. The quilt Fair New Mexico-41 Fair Years incorporates more than six hundred of the ribbons she won at the fair every subsequent year except 2020 (when the fair was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic). Johnson earned ribbons for needlework, knitting, crochet, pies, cookies, cakes, canning, jewelry, flowers, vegetables, and potted plants. The title of the quilt is a reference to the state song, and the design places the state's Zia sun symbol at the center. The quilt earned Johnson yet another ribbon: Best in Category (miscellaneous quilt) at the 2023 New Mexico State Fair.

For the past few weeks, I have been teaching a beginner quilting class at the Lansing Makers Network. Tonight they attached their bindings! Didn't they do a fantastic job!?
On the left is a woman holding up a square, rainbow-hued, quilted table topper. On the right is a man holding a long rectangular table runner with multicolored blocks and pink and brown borders. Both of them use disappearing-nine-patch blocks.

The quilt on the left has been hand quilted in the big stitch style using a variety of colors of embroidery floss, and the quilt on the right has been machine quilted with straight line quilting seams.
