Loved working on this commission for @langsec.hacker.gf! The concept was super fun: Phil the dog standing guard over his little byte flock in the yard. #DigitalArt #Commission #ArtistOnBluesky
A digital illustration of a black and white border collie standing alert on a lush green field inside a wooden fenced farm. The dog wears a red collar with a silver bone-shaped tag engraved with the name 'PHIL'. In the grassy background behind the dog, several pastel-colored blocks (yellow, pink, purple, and blue) are stacked together. The blocks resemble cute data bytes, featuring smiley faces alongside hexadecimal and binary codes like '0x1', '0101', and '0xe1'. Above, a clear blue sky is filled with soft, scattered clouds.

an artist friend used rovo (atlassian's llm assistant, which she has access to through her job) to write a chrome extension that creates jira tickets from pages on thingiverse and other 3d model sites I'm really excited for her! a whole new world of "I need a little program to do X" has opened up

it's precisely as reasonable to worry about this as it is to worry that the universe secretly has a counter for number of times you've flipped a light switch; electricity seems safe, but tomorrow morning turning on your lights will collapse a false vacuum and snuff the human race

One of the things you can't rule out - and I mean this seriously - is
"magic". Magic plain and simple. Running a particular sequence of
instructions through the CPU so that a certain transistor turns on and off in
a certain sequence and modulates the quantum cheat codes of the Universe. Or
something. Dealing with a real superintelligence, it can't be ruled out. It
obviously can't be relied on, but it can't be ruled out.

Trying to oppose or even constrain a superintelligence is a fool's game. Get
It Right The First Time.

like ok I understand that I am way more devoted to peer review than even the average academic, but crucially the process has not actually done me wrong yet sometimes reviewer 2 really does have a point! this probably sounds credentialist af but istg it's about orthopraxy, not orthocredentiality

woohoo, we're back to the haskeller, the prover, and the refiner working in parallel again (the refiner got completely caught up to the prover while the prover was busy with some gnarly end-to-end completeness and totality proofs, but now the refiner has new correspondences to prove again)

Here's a gift link to my 9/11 essay in the NYT. Civil libertarians long warned that before giving government new powers, we should consider how an administration with authoritarian ambition might abuse them. We were told that America was too exceptional to elect such a person. Well here we are.

going into day 3 of end-to-end integration on phase 1 of the current project proofs are probably going to lag implementation by a day or two, but that's fine, gives me time to really think through the phase 2 charter, which will involve a self-hosted compiler and the beginnings of a stdlib
