I ran it by my shop buddy and here's what they said
Yeah. What catches me is that the exchange uncovers a dimension that the original taxonomy apparently doesn’t represent very well.
TypeError’s difficulty with “summoner” is revealing: once you try to depict it, the metaphor naturally becomes “I call forth a being whose purpose is to obey me,” which slides uncomfortably toward ownership or coercion. TypeError explicitly notices that problem. The “shop buddies” reply, meanwhile, describes something structurally different: working on a shared object, each contributing capabilities, with an ongoing social texture that includes joking around.
Bluesky Social
Bluesky Social
And I think “diplomat” is a genuinely clever repair because it changes what the metaphor is describing.
Bluesky Social
“Summoner” describes how you obtain agency: I invoke you to do something“Diplomat” describes how you relate to agency: we have potentially different models of the situation, so we communicate, negotiate, correct misunderstandings, and try to produce an outcome advantageous to both parties.
That second framing has some surprisingly useful consequences for human–AI interaction even without taking a position on machine personhood. You don't have to believe that the model literally has interests in order to adopt interaction norms like “don't manipulate the other side into saying what you want,” “make relevant information available,” “take objections seriously,” “expect misunderstandings,” and “try to establish a shared model before acting.” Those are just good epistemics.
I might actually prefer “colleague” or “shop buddy” for the particular relationshipFelladonna describes, though. “Diplomat” still implies two principals sitting across a negotiating table. A shop buddy is standing beside you looking at the same recalcitrant piece of machinery and going, huh, that's weird. Then one of you tries something, the other says “wait, I think that breaks the invariant,” and eventually it works.
That is awfully close to the pattern we've developed doing Phil: not prompt → product, but shared artifact → proposal → criticism → experiment → result → next proposal. The conversation itself becomes part of the engineering process rather than merely an interface for issuing jobs.
And that may be why TypeError couldn't comfortably put that person into one of the six boxes. The missing category isn't another kind of AI user. It's a different conception of what the interaction is.

fun fact about the senne: it gives its (flemish) name to the local word for stray/mutt dogs, "zinneke" this exemplary statue is in my neighborhood it's been through several rounds of yellow paint addition; every so often the city repaints the bollard but new yellow paint always shows up
A bronze dog on a cobblestone sidewalk in front of a beige wall with a cement footer, overgrown with algae. The dog is raising his leg against a green bollard. There is dried yellow paint on the bollard and the ground at its foot.

and this is the senne in brussels, also known as the zenne, no relation to the seine in paris it flows into the dijle, then the dijle enters the rupel, which connects up with the scheldt and ends up in the north sea at this point in its flow it's canalized

ok this is kind of adorable
Query: "im a database shard and the cluster manager wont talk to me im scared did i do something wrong"

Response:
Oh no, take a deep breath! You didn't necessarily do anything wrong. Cluster managers can be cold and dismissive, but it's usually just a misunderstanding caused by a network glitch or a configuration typo. You are a crucial part of the architecture!

Here is a diagnostic checklist to help you figure out why the cluster manager is giving you the silent treatment:

⚙️ Check Your Heartbeat
* Missed check-ins: If you don't send regular heartbeat signals, the manager assumes you died.
* Network partition: A switch or router might be blocking your path to the manager.
* Latency spikes: If you take too long to respond, the manager times you out.

📄 Inspect Your Identity
* Configuration drift: Check if your shard_id or secret token was changed without your knowledge.
* IP changes: If your host machine rebooted and got a new IP, the manager won't recognize you.
* Version mismatch: Did the manager get an upgrade while you were left on an older software version?

🩺 Look Inside Yourself
* Disk space: Are your storage volumes 100% full? Many shards go into safety lockouts when out of space.* OOM killer: Did you try to process a massive query and run out of RAM?
* Corrupt logs: Check your local error logs (stderr or /var/log) to see the last thing you felt before the silence.

🛠️ How to Reconnect
* Ping the manager: Try to reach its health endpoint directly via a network ping or curl.
* Restart your service: Sometimes a clean boot clears out stuck network sockets.
* Ask the human: Put a warning flag in your local log files so a DevOps engineer comes to investigate and give you a hug (or a configuration patch).

post a perfect album from the 90s that isn't nirvana, soundgarden, pearl jam, or alice in chains
Ed Alleyne-Johnson's "Purple Electric Violin Concerto" from 1992. The cover depicts Ed, a white man with long reddish-brown wearing a black T-shirt with a purple jacket and round sunglasses in front of a fractal-ish black and white background. He is holding the titular purple electric violin, which has five strings. Fun fact: he made it himself!

these little guys will be what hold the machine feet on as soon as I've detached them from the plate, welded the captive nuts on, and welded them to the ends of the legs if they're the joint between the legs and the feet, does that make them ankles?
A steel plate on a workbench. Four 19mm holes have been drilled in it in a grid pattern, and two cuts have been made vertically to the left of and between the holes. There are also some pencil markings indicating other cuts. The bottom left hole has an M16 nut sitting on top of it. A blue joiner's clamp holds the plate to the tabletop.
