When an activity or industry is a constant source of criminality and the judicial system continuously fails to address the crimes, the activity or industry as a whole should be made illegal.

With HPAI being now a constant annual occurrence, with thousands of birds (domestic and wild, plus wild mammals) & the taxpayer paying the costs, year on year, how is this economically assessed? Is the industry economically sustainable, as well as ethically, socially and ecologically sustainable?

The constantly repeated sentence of "there is still time to act"... It merely encourages BAU. In view of all the evidence we have, could we not stop saying this now?

Those deaths are now incorporated as part of the usual rates of mortality that are systematically accepted as normal practice in the poultry industry. Governments: silence. Veterinary profession: silence. Nothing to see here, keep walking.

The potential existence of one or two pro-conservation gamekeepers doesn't change what the large majority of them have done and continue doing. They know their reputation is justifiably tarnished, all their own making.

Animal ag uses ~200× more freshwater than AI. AI data centres are projected to use ~1 trillion litres/yr by 2028. Animal ag already consumes 228 trillion litres of blue water/yr. Not defending AI, but this context isn't well known. I also wonder how much AI water goes to military vs. general use.

I assume DEFRA has teams of scientists as advisors - Ministries in every country have them! Perhaps you could update your knowledge re: livestock and fire. A lot of myth-busting needed amongst farmers on this (and so many other subjects - farmers are not scientists, they don't always know it all).

6. What it says is “this is our territory, culturally as well as geographically, and we’ll keep it looking the way we want, which is one big sheep pasture, regardless of what those blethering eco-nuts with their binoculars and anoraks say. We dominate here, and the rest of you can eff off.”

5. So what’s really going on? The value of any grazing created is minimal – arguably negative, as sheep-farming here is loss-making and survives only through subsidies. I believe the real reason it continues is the same reason the far right attaches flags to lamp-posts. It’s a territorial marker.

I don't think I have declared to have anything against evidence? My point was against narrow focus on one practice when there are other contributory factors to a problem that are not addressed. BTW gamebird releases do contribute to disease spread. This is evidence-based.

Lamosena @lamosena.bsky.social · 25/01/2026
As long as all contributing factors are allowed to continue with no limits (incl. tens of millions of gamebirds released in the wild annually in the UK by the shooting lobby) it'd be unfair to 'blame' garden feeding.
