I feel personally attacked by this post. 🤣😅

Just added a note to the event info that “dogs are not permitted to attend caving or climbing sessions. Please make other arrangements for your pet if attending booked sessions”. If anyone reading it wonders if a specific incident led to this detail being included….yes, yes it did. 🤣😅

Merci @ebcul.bsky.social! Super-helpful staff, a lovely building, and I can finally lay the 5-year-long quest to consult this book to rest. ❤️

Fancy library. We know it’s a library because it says so on the outside! 🤣

Lina Arthur @lakeslina.bsky.social · 15/07/2026
And here it is! I provide my name and address and am led to a private study area. There is no one else here, so I am left alone with The Book.

Lina Arthur @lakeslina.bsky.social · 15/07/2026
The library has ordered up the book for me! Their main concern is that I understand I can’t take it out on loan. I explain that I want to read it here. That is quite alright and I am told to wait for its arrival.

Development: this -is- a museum. The sign says the library is on the third floor….

He has now crossed his arms and I cannot quite make out if he is asking if one has to cover one’s shoulders to enter or if he’s looking for an exhibit of Ancient Egyptian mummies. …I wish him well. I am going to go up a million steps and hope to find a library.
000
Lina Arthur @lakeslina.bsky.social · 15/07/2026
After nearly being hit by a football on the steps, a guy has accosted me to ask if it’s a museum. Sir, I do not know, I am looking for the library!

Lina Arthur @lakeslina.bsky.social · 15/07/2026
The Metro has taken us all to the city centre. I don’t know where anyone else is going, but I am going to try to establish whether this giant palace up many steps contains a library.

Lina Arthur @lakeslina.bsky.social · 15/07/2026
Thank goodness for buses that announce the names of the stops. Now to find the Metro stop…

Lina Arthur @lakeslina.bsky.social · 15/07/2026
A nice grandmother has just arrived with her grandkids and after checking if I speak French is now consulting me about how to get to the city centre. I have noted that we are both working off the same tourist map and that I have no idea what I’m doing but at least we agree on the plan. 🤣

Challenge 2: Find the bus stop. Thank goodness Swiss bus stops are well labelled. I believe I am on the correct side of the road.

Today’s quest is to the library of the University of Lausanne. Challenge 1: getting a free public transport card from the campsite.

fascinatingly* the French news is translating "Count Binface" as « le Compte Tête-de-Poubelle » rather than « Visage-de-Poubelle) which is, in fairness, more accurate (his entire head is a bin, not just his face) typical British media not asking the important underlying questions * ta gueule
Screenshot from Le Parisien. A photo of Count Binface, a man in a sort of black Darth Vader suit but with a silvery grey cape and a bin on his head with eye slit and mouthhole.

Headline:

When utilized in literature review, LLMs consistently 1. fail to mention female authors in female-led literatures, 2. insist that men are more influential or more heavily cited when this is contradicted by objective citation counts, and 3. attribute women’s work to hallucinated male scholars.

Can anyone help - Is it really not possible these days to request an inter-library loan without being a current student or staff at a university? I’m a published author, I have an Oxford DPhil, I’m doing some research and the book I need is in Switzerland. Do I really have to go to Switzerland?!

Octavia E. Butler said, “Never let pride or laziness prevent you from learning, improving your work, changing its direction when necessary. Persistence is essential to any writer—the persistence to finish your work, to keep writing in spite of rejection, to keep reading, writing, submitting work.”

Dear everyone, As per the post from the Bodleian librarian below, AI bots and scrapers are putting just about every website under great pressure, British History Online included. A lot of excellent tech staff are working hard to keep everything working, but outages and siruptions are inevitable.

It’s the result of massive bot activity, downloading data at a scale which our infrastructure has found challenging. We have been finding this across all our metadata resources in recent months.

Basically, take the amount of money you think your favorite author gets, halve it, and then halve it again, and you have a number that's probably a lot closer to their actual earnings from writing. "But I don't think they make that much!" Halve that. Halve it again.

One of the many reasons AI can't produce good writing is it can't hate its own writing. It can't think to itself "Maybe I'm illiterate" during the writing process. And that's essential
