my cat bigboy very rarely shows himself out in the open. he suffers from arthritis & gingivostomatitis caused by FIV. he's always in some form of pain, so he tends to hide instead of hang out with other cats & humans. today he's chosen to lounge on the sofa. a rare treat for me

just goes to show that having something printed doesnt mean it's accurate. the cover hers says worsley was captain of hms endurance, but endurance was never an hms. it wasnt a navy ship; it was privately owned. it's official name was S.Y. Endurance for "steam yacht"

Someone working out on a spar on RRS Discovery about a month ago. Camera: Carl Zeiss Werra 3 with 35mm Flektogon lens. Film: Kentmere 100 #believeinfilm #filmphotography
Black and white photo of Captain Robert Falcon Scott's ship RRS Discovery viewed almost head on. A man is out on one of the spars near the top of the front mast (I don't know the proper nautical terms haha). A team of people were blacking the rope rigging and re-varnishing the masts and spars and making repairs as they went.

Your 'downtime' scenes have to advance the story just as much as a chase or confrontation does. They advance the intellectual/emotional aspects. Never think of them as filler. Give them purpose.

steinbeck has a way of explaining the evils of capitalism better than anyone ever could
"The works of the roots of the vines, of the trees, must be destroyed to keep up the price, and this is the saddest, bitterest thing of all. Carloads of oranges dumped on the ground. The people came for miles to take the fruit, but this could not be. How would they buy oranges at twenty cents a dozen if they could drive out and pick them up? And men with hoses squirt kerosene on the oranges, and they are angry at the crime, angry at the people who have come to take the fruit. A million people hungry, needing the fruit-and kerosene sprayed over the golden mountains. And the smell of rot fills the country. Burn coffee for fuel in the ships. Burn corn to keep warm, it makes a hot fire. Dump potatoes in the rivers and place guards along the banks to keep the hungry people from fishing them out. Slaughter the pigs and bury them, and let the putrescence drip down into the earth.

There is a crime here that goes beyond denunciation. There is a sorrow here that weeping cannot symbolize. There is a failure here that topples all our success. The fertile earth, the straight tree rows, the sturdy trunks, and the ripe fruit. And children dying of pellagra must die because a profit cannot be taken from an orange. And coroners must fill in the certificate- died of malnutrition- because the food must rot, must be forced to rot. The people come with nets to fish for potatoes in the river, and the guards hold them back; they come in rattling cars to get the dumped oranges, but the kerosene is sprayed And they stand still and watch the potatoes float by, listen to the screaming pigs being killed in a ditch and covered with quick-lime, watch the mountains of oranges slop down to a putrefying ooze; and in the eyes of the people there is the failure; and in the eyes of the hungry there is a growing wrath. In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage."
- John Steinbeck, The Grapes of Wrath

Frederick Albert Cook (1900)
"We Were All Reasonably Good-Looking When We Embarked, but Were Otherwise When We Returned" (from Through the First Antarctic Night, 1898–1899)

----- [from the Public Domain Review] -----
Memoirs of early Antarctic expeditions are, by necessity, meditations on disaster. Sea ice, frostbite, freezing winds, the compass-upsetting effects of the magnetic poles — everything in these frigid zones poses a threat to human life, and the threat is often carried out. Frederick A. Cook’s Through the First Antarctic Night, 1898–1899 is a remarkable journal in which he recounts the highs and (many) lows of his experience as part of the Belgica expedition.

Often considered the first proper expedition of the so-called "Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration", it would set a precedent for hardship, endurance, and disaster in the exploration of such climes. Cook and his fellow explorers — including Roald Amundsen, who'd years later go on to beat Scott to first reach the South Pole — became the first to spend winter on Antarctica, when their ship became trapped in the ice for more than a year, from February 1898 to March 1899. For two months — from 17th May 1898 until 23rd July — they were plunged into a sunless world, an ordeal of great physical and mental toil wonderfully captured in the journal of Cook — the American-born anthropologist, surgeon, and leader of the expedition.
Although he was later the subject of controversy — accused of bogusly claiming, in 1906, to have scaled Mount McKinley, and, in 1908, to have been the first to reach the North Pole — he shows himself to be reasonably modest and a charming writer of prose. He is especially good at evoking the “soul-despairing” darkness of the polar night, which had never previously been experienced at that latitude.
