And I think the best ones are the ones where there are human eyes underneath. The Haunted Mask, the Horrorland monsters. There's no contacts or anything. There are human eyes. And I think that is deeply unnerving.

I'm blocking out their information even though they posted this publicly, but this post got recommended to me on facebook And it is seriously killing me that parents are asking for rote memorization instead of understanding.

Spite is REALLY good motivation. Also wanting to win. I really want to win.

A screenshot of my goodreads reading goal. I've had to increase it to 125 because I'm at 111.

Wanna see my pumpkin, bluesky?

An unfired clay pumpkin house with a door and windows. There's a ghost in one window.

By the way the creepy bag of hair weighed SIXTY GRAMS (Excuse the crappy lighting.)

A ziploc bag of braided hair on a scale that reads 62 grams.

She read me The Glow Show by Susi Schaefer, so like. That was a fun book XD Recommend that one.

@basyboo.bsky.social Isn't it cool how spite is such a good motivation? And I even joined my first readathin, so now I'm hanging out with a ton of other people reading "obscenely fast" and having a great time 😘

Broke my food processor today (oops) and went to look at my order to see what size it was for when I replace it and you know, almost 9 years is not bad

I won't, but like. The spite is serving me well in the readathon I'm doing this month!

This is nothing against the book or the author or anything, but there is no world in which this cheap Scholastic paperback should cost 12.50. This book came out in 2025 and it's already roughed up. When I was in school, this is the type of book I'd buy for 3 dollars from a scholastic book order.

And finally (for now) THE HOUSE THAT WHISPERS by Lin Thompson ANOTHER queer ghost book - this one stars a trans boy who is staying with his sister at their grandmother's house. They often do this, but this time stuff feels weird. The house smells weird and their grandmother is forgetting things.

Also a recent read, 365 DAYS TO ALASKA by Cathy Carr is about a family that has been living off-grid in Alaska moving to the Connecticut suburbs when the parents divorce. You get the fish out of water stuff you expect, but a lot of nuance and emotional maturity. It was a very interesting read.

Read recently, FAMILY WEEK by Sarah Moon is queer found family set in Provincetown, Maine, which is a real thing I had to google. Lots of different ways for a family to look in this one. This would work for younger MG readers and reluctant readers, as well.

SECOND CHANCE SUMMER by Sarah Kapit Summer camp + best friend break up + make it queer. One of the main characters in this is also a fat Jewish girl with dyspraxia, while the other is queer (and a child actor!). Love a good friendship breakup story.

WHERE THE LOST ONES GO by Akemi Dawn Bowman Oh look, another queer ghost book. This gives Mary Downing Hahn vibes, but leans a little more into the fantasy than the horror. It takes the main character's grief for her grandmother extremely seriously and really gives it some weight.

BLOOD IN THE WATER by Tiffany D. Jackson I really like Jackson's YA and this was a super fun MG thriller, an underrated genre. Set on Martha's vineyard, it has a great summer feel and talks about a lot of interesting history. Serious stakes without being too scary for the audience.

RECIPE FOR DISASTER by Aimee Lucido This is a mixed media book which is super fun. Has prose, poetry, recipes, etc. The main character is Jewish, and when she asks her parents to have a Bat Mitzvah, they say no, so she decides to simply throw herself one. A great look at faith and identity.

THE FLICKER by H.E. Edgmon One of my favourite books of 2025 period. A year into the apocalypse, basically, two step-siblings have been left by their parents' deaths to look after their infant brother. All things considered they're doing okay, but they're running out of food. (I need two posts.)

Laina @lainasparetime.bsky.social · 06/09/2026

WHERE THE MOUNTAIN MEETS THE MOON by Grace Lin This one's not sad! It's an older book but holds up very well. For fantasy readers, this is inspired by Chinese folklore and has super cool illustrations by the author. This is just a fun one.

DEAR MOTHMAN by Robin Gow Told in verse, this follows a young trans boy grieving his best friend, the only other person who knew he was trans, by writing to Mothman I had to stop reading this 2 pages in and save it for another day because I was not emotionally prepared to SOB about Mothman

Less spooky, but also dealing with grief, we have A HOME FOR GODDESSES AND DOGS by Leslie Connor Following the death of her mother, a young girl is sent to live with her aunt and her aunt's wife. They adopt a dog almost immediately after she moves in. It's sweet and gentle and kind and lovely.

GHOST GIRL by Ally Malinenko Also a ghost book! There's a really great theme about feminism in this one, and about how girls are told to be small and quiet and not to take up space. It also deals with mental health and grief. And one of the MC's friends is fat and the rep is very nicely handled.

THE VISITORS by Grey Howard Perfect for this time of year - this is a queer middle grade ghost story that genuinely creeped me out at times. There's some very complicated issues tackled in this one, and it's all handled very well. Exceptional book.

The entire Holly-Mei series by Christina Matula. THE NOT-SO-UNIFORM LIFE OF HOLLY-MEI, THE NOT-SO-PERFECT PLAN, and THE NOT-SO-SIMPLE QUESTION This is a great trilogy of books about a Chinese-Canadian girl whose family moves to Hong Kong for her mother's job. The food descriptions are amazing.

I've been referring to this as a "theraputic Squishmallow". Anyways meet the generic one I got at the dollar store for a bunch cheaper.

A light purple stuffed dragon with a white nose and belly.

Nothin' good starts in a getaway car (Post your getaway vehicle, apparently.)

The Creepy Coupe from Wacky Races. It's a car that looks like a haunted house.

Also reusable swiffer pads/covers continue to be the MVP. You maintain the pros of a swiffer (easy, lightweight) without the cons (disposable, expensive). I get ones like this and would recommend them especially if you have issues with lifting heavy things. You can also mop small spaces with them.

A pack of reusable microfiber pads for swiffer sweeper dust mops

YOU KNOW WHAT, let me expand on that. You know normal drying racks (left), yes? That would not work in my space, so I got this one (right). The BONUS here is that because to use it, you put the clothing on hangers, you don't then SEPARATELY have to fold or hang them.

A laundry drying rack that has arms coming out from a central pole. The top arms has clothespins type clips. The lower arms have holes to put hangers through.
