if you’re an artist who ever thought “what’s the point? The world is Hell and I should do something that matters instead” even in an ICE detention center people will treat art as sacred, seek it out, and find joy and comfort in it. You aren’t making art, you’re making hope.

On her first day in the facility, Becky asked for a scrap of paper and a pen, and began to draw the inmates on the table next to her. She was immediately inundated with portrait requests. A Mexican woman called Lopez, who had a photo of her children stored on one of the iPads, told Becky she would buy her some paper and colouring pencils from the commissary if Becky drew her kids. She soon became the dorm’s unofficial artist-in-residence, with women huddling around the dirty mirrors to make themselves look presentable before they sat for her. They would decorate their cells with Becky’s drawings, or send them to their families. Lopez declared herself Becky’s manager. “She kept saying, ‘Becky, you need to ask for stuff in exchange. Ask for popcorn.’ And I’d be like, ‘Lopez, I don’t need anything.’ I thought, I’m here briefly, you’re stuck here a long time. I’m not going to take your food away from you.”

A three by three grid illustrating in blue pen cartoon portraits of women in an ICE detention center. “Mrs Kailey,” Bana, Lewelyn, Ikram, Asil, ‘Auntie,’ ‘F.Z,’ Kseniia, and “P.A.” Two have light hair, three have glasses, one wears a hijab, one poses, and one holds a drink.

Updates: • I wrote 3000 words in the last 48 hours • genAI is ick and we should all still commission artists (incl narrators for audio books, covers, fan art, & yourself as a ghibli character) • the new hunger games book made me cry so much I had to drink a Gatorade. I think that's all ✌️

Just deleted the X app off my phone and my entire facebook account. We'll see how I go without messenger I guess? Genuinely feel so bad for all the 🇺🇸 tiktok creators losing their jobs & livelihoods.

I had a most excellent time at Dragonsteel! Still pinching myself to check it was real. My only problem is I bought so much stuff I now must side quest for an extra suitcase. Wish me luck as I search for a Walmart 🤣

So are we shitposting on here yet or are we still pretending this is going to be more put-together than the bird app? Because personally I can't wait to get back to shitposting.

My formative years were deep in the 90s/2000s ED thin culture torture & it was VERY hard not to be triggered by the bodies in Wicked. I went to the bathroom & caught myself poking at my own collarbone. Please don't make being super super thin cool again. Our daughters deserve better.

Louise Holland @lahollandauthor.bsky.social · 20/11/2024

Just saw Wicked - it was absolutely fantastic, brilliant work, bawled my eyes out. BUT jfc I don't think I can let my kid watch it, because I'm not ready to have a conversation about why Ariana's sternum is so pronounced it looks like she ate a plastic butterfly. The thinness is legit terrifying.

Publisher: Do you want to put an LLM clause in the copyright statement? Me: Definitely. How specific can we get? Publisher: As specific as you like.

The copyright statement from Ephemeral City which reads in part: No part of this book may be used as data for ‘training’ any large language model or as part of any machine learning or neural network architeture. Human creaivity cannot be replicated by doing maths with stolen art. Altman, Andressen, and all their cronies can get fucked. Enquires should be made to the publisher.

I'm writing more books, but I'm also slow as heck and full of anxiety so I drop off the digital earth a lot. If we've had 2+ positive interactions, congrats, I consider you my Internet Friend. If you're a GGoT that gets upgraded to hypothetical coven member and I'd go to war for you 🫡

When I'm not writing (or procrastinating writing) I'm doing Vending Stuff, as my husband and I own a vending machine business. I have a 5yo daughter & a 12yo stepson. I love bg3 & painting despite being bad at both. I am pro-LGBTQ+, pro-women, pro-🍉, pro-feminism, pro-free-speech, and pro-humanity.
