On my way to Gothenburg for today's Batteries Sweden meeting, and the train is currently at a standstill outside of the final station because we are 20 minutes *too early*. This is first, at least for me...

iOS does have this appreciated feature now, for newer devices at least.

I actually bought a (very cheap) soldering iron today just for this, haha. Ironically I probably last owned one about the time I should have fixed this the first time. There's a little bit of technique to it but once you get it down it's not hard to do a functional job!

Nice! My efforts weren't so comprehensive this time, but now that I went to this effort I'm trying to resist the urge to completely change the configuration of one or two of my others :p

In today's "better late than never" news, I have at last gotten around to rewiring the pickup selector switch on one of my guitars, since I had a tech install new pickups in it a while back and they did the switch backwards. That was about 18 years ago

The fallout from Northvolt's troubles continues now at Novo Energy (Northvolt-Volvo JV), who have announced plans to reduce headcount 30%. Very unfortunate and hoping for the best for friends and former colleagues at Novo. #battchat

Really looking forward to this album. The new single took me back to listening to the 9.11 album for the first time 23 years ago, all over again. Can't wait to hear it, and can't wait to completely fail at learning to play the songs!

I fully endorse this, as I'm sure you guessed :) The description of Wh/kg on single electrode/material level for example bothers me no end. Since it is always calculated using a potential, which of course is vs a reference, it should be Wh/kg vs something

My second 🔓editorial for @naturenano.bsky.social is out. This time, I talk about something I care a lot: Why do battery researchers not use a shared basic electrochemistry terminology? www.nature.com/articles/s41... What's your experience? 🙂 #batteries #battchat #electrochemistry

If Bluesky is to replace X for news, global coverage is key. There are consequential events happening in Syria, Ukraine, Georgia, Sudan & Gaza right now. This pack includes reporters on the ground there & analysts. Pls consider following these to share their reporting & build Bluesky's news value

I had a brief scroll on 'X' for old times' sake recently. Top of the lists were Trump and Musk tweets, followed by some conspiracy theories, a couple of flat earther videos, crypto, AI generated slop, some Hitler worship, maybe 1 post in 100 worth reading. Let it rot

I've seen something similar before. Also possible to short cans over longer distance with many series connected cells between. Then you get a higher voltage spark with lots of power, enough to locally heat materials to very high temp and start thermal runaway, even if shorting terminals does nothing
010
Matt Lacey @lacey.se · 28/11/2024
Assuming I'm reading it right, it checks out - if two cell cans in series stack come into contact and they're not isolated then one cell will short. A number of ways to minimise that though now. Didn't they use to market these as not able to catch fire?

I'm curious about the cycle life too. All the real data I've ever seen (likely outdated now) doesn't indicate great cycle life (and much worse calendar life) but spec sheets suggest almost on par with LFP. Interested to know if there is real data or just unverifiable numbers

It's probably true but it's outdated and the ramp has progressed. ~3 GWh is my translation of their previous goal of 100k cells/year which I realise now they admit they won't reach. But they did 60k in a week two months ago, which would be a bit under 2 GWh annualised by my reckoning

Yes, scrap rate has been publicly reported as one of the biggest problems

Matt Lacey @lacey.se · 26/11/2024
They do have functional production. Their publicly communicated end of year target should amount to something like 3 GWh/yr. It's not where it should be, but it's not nothing

Even if Xiaomi has largely brought the software and electronics and has mostly outsourced the powertrain, it has still already succeeded at something that companies like Apple and Dyson failed to do. I don't see that should be dismissed lightly

I'm not sure I understand why it matters. It was designed and built in China by Chinese companies at the end of the day right? Sure there are probably Western-produced components too but basically no company produces the whole thing itself

Xiaomi is making its own cars though, at least now, produced in a factory they built. And the design, engineering and procurement was led by them. www.gizmochina.com/2023/11/16/x...

Others have noted it but I will too: The big reason Bluesky is so hot right now is that the people who add value to social media - the frequent posters in specific fields - are here now, talking to each other and creating the "spectator value" that draws users and attention.

That said, I drove to UK (2000 km) and back this summer by myself, up to 1250 km in one day, then I took my diesel Golf - charging would have been a bit tedious. But I have only done that trip 3 times in my life, so it's a bit of an edge case

Nearly always at home. DC charging is max 88 kW which is obviously not the fastest, but easily charges say 20-90% during a lunch stop. Have done 500 km road trips and not felt limited by the charging speed

I dunno. I have a BYD and while it's certainly not the best car in the world it holds its own against others in its class. At the time I got it the equivalent Tesla was ~40% more expensive. Similar situation for MG at least in Sweden. BYD's vehicles are also getting better, fast

Not as familiar with the experience of the established players setting up in EU, but at least they can bring organisational experience, LG and CATL experience here has not been as rough, or? EU has made a big deal of reducing dependence on China and would love to see e.g. NV build over CATL
