I'm definitely a nerd because I will get into a debate about why the insular g is not in fact an obsolete letter (a version of it is still used for lowercase g in quite a lot of fonts and a significant minority of people handwrite their lowercase g's that way as well).

They just do it at scale and make a lot more money than the people who actually used to commit arson so they could collect and sell nails. (Nails were quite expensive like 300 years ago. The daily wage of a laborer was enough to buy something in the vicinity of 20 small nails, maybe less.)

Like I'm sorry, I think we should punish the kind of people who do stuff like burn down buildings people live in so they can rake through the ashes and collect the nails that were in the buildings. And that is the level of antisocial behavior the tech companies routinely engage in at this point.

This is a thing that specific companies are doing to people and communities for their own gain and they don't give a shit who they hurt. The only good outcome of this is going to be if we end up holding them accountable and stop letting people do this kind of thing.

We are all under a kind of an informational assault and it's causing people to engage in a bunch of maladaptive behaviors of various sorts. Some of those behaviors include attacking each other. Others include ruining their life by becoming obsessed with a chatbot or disengaging from communities.

I think this actually understates how bad things are. People are getting accused of using AI in their art just because their art is good and people are paranoid about getting fooled by the misinformation machines pumping out worthless garbage and trying to force feed it to them.

But it would be pretty amazing for him to get lost for a day or something because he was out in a Lamborghini and the internet and phone network went down and he didn't know how to ask for directions home. Especially if he doesn't carry any emergency cash for gas or food.

I'm guessing the only time Huang is out sans assistants and bodyguards is when he's joyriding in his cars or maybe some other recreational activities. Partly because the only story he had about having a problem was having to give his zip code at a gas station.

And this isn't meant as a criticism of neurodivergent people who can't remember their address and stuff or navigate. But like I'm friends with some people like that and while they can't remember it they do make sure they can access it in an emergency.

And it's pretty plausible the US could be in a larger war basically any time completely at random. Like if he thought making up that story was making some kind of useful or charming point he should fire the PR people he has minding all of his interactions.

Especially you know if you live near a major metropolitan area in a country that's fighting a war, which he currently in fact does. It is not wildly implausible that Iran or say wildfires could cause a bay area wireless or internet outage.

Lacci @lacci.bsky.social · 11h
That is really bizarre if it's true and such an insane story to tell if it isn't. And like he should have someone write his home address and important phone numbers in those leather jackets he always wears like you sometimes do for small child (or you do for a pet). Because outages are a real thing.

Lacci @lacci.bsky.social · 11h
He would probably have to ask for directions or directory assistance if the phones are working to reach an Nvidia facility or somewhere else where one of his minions is, and then go there or call there and wait for there to be someone present who knows where he lives.

Lacci @lacci.bsky.social · 11h
So according to Jensen Huang he doesn't know his address or telephone number or his way around town but he still goes out by himself sometimes. So if he is not lying and there was a major internet outage while he was out he would have absolutely no idea how to get home or contact anyone.

Many Americans think Donald Trump is honest. Why?
Trump's open racism paradoxically makes many Americans think he is more honest and trustworthy. Call it the "Archie Bunker" effect. ... You can listen to this channel as a podcast!…

James Cameron's Avatar would undeniably have been a much better film if they had made a few minor changes to the script, cast Samuel L. Jackson as the lead, and titled it Paint With All The Colors of the Wind Motherfucker.

I have that genetic aldehyde (and some keytone) sensitivity, which tends to make me very averse to tasting soap. Not all soaps have aldehydes in them, but it's very common. That's why they say people with aldehyde sensitivity think cilantro tastes like soap (though it's not exactly the same taste).

None of that will happen. But I guess it's good to know that almost no matter what happens to them they're going to be getting away with murder basically.

But like the scale of the routine deliberate knowing harm to users is off the charts. And it just seems impossible to argue that the penalty shouldn't massively exceed their net valuation.

And for a bunch of the responsible executives to spend a lot of time in prison and also probably be financially wiped out (maybe by the shareholders suing). And of course whatever is left of the companies has to be broken up as well.

The more I hear about what the tech giants have done, usually because they're being let off scott free or with a slap on the wrist, the more it seems like the mildest just outcome is for shareholders to be completely wipes out and ownership of whatever is left distributed to those wronged.

Now if we'd just actually give people who make media some of the money they earn instead of handing ever more of what they make over to a few billionaires. They seem to be shooting for all media being made almost for free and they collect all the profit.

Burnham was kind of the first wave of the nichefication of pop culture we've experienced. It's now so much easier to make it in media without having to speak to as huge an audience. And a super winner take all environment for entertainers was a very 20th century phenomenon, and not a healthy one.

It does seem like there's a case to be made that if the government botches an execution that should qualify as having had the sentence carried out whether or not it kills you. Once is questionable enough, trying to kill you repeatedly is definitely both unusual and cruel.

I wonder which would come out more nutritious as a staple, leeched Play-Doh or Twinkies.

I mean it probably tastes fine, and unlike a lot of technically swallowable things you can gain nutrition from it. The salt is really a big issue though in terms of if you had to eat it for survival reasons. You could probably leach enough salt out if you had plenty of water.

Yeah, I think his core audience seems like the people who grew up in like the early YouTube era (I think it came out in 2005). That might just be a coincidence, I don't know. But like that age cohort.

Oh interesting, for us it's the other way round. The two youngest get it and the one who loves him is the one right on the boundary of Gen Z and Millennial. It's the five siblings born 1986-1995 who find Burnham's appeal difficult to understand.

But to the greatest extent possible it's all stuff you'd use in food, with the exception of borax. According to the SDS it's the NaCl and CaCl that would first poison you if you were to really decide to chow down determinedly on Play-Doh so you couldn't really eat enough borax from it to worry.
140
Lacci @lacci.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
It always surprised me that Play-Doh is pretty directly dough like you'd bake with. Mostly wheat flour, water, and salts (definitely a lot of NaCl, some CaCl, and borax, I'm not sure what others). There's also some scents, surfactants, oils, and extra amylopectin to help it retain water better.

If the things you say are designed solely to get other people to believe what you want them to, or do what you want them to, the concept of someone who isn't going to deviate from their beliefs out of convenience doesn't scan.

There's no amount of money, no possible threats, no leverage that can make the fucking POPE go out in public and say a machine can be conscious. Even the shitty popes of the last few centuries would almost certainly agree with him!

At a really fundamental level Leo XIV is just a person with sound, well-reasoned, moral stances on the world and how life should be lived who isn't afraid to say those things in public. That kind of person simply does not make sense to business leaders and politicians for whom speech is convenience.

I feel like it probably speaks to something real and profound about the absolutely massive shifts going on in young people's experience of the world and society going on at that time. But it's hard to suss out which specific things. There were so many and they hit young people so hard. :(

My siblings and I talk about how there seems to be a pretty abrupt age divide on how people respond to Burnham. The older 5 of us had a really dramatically different reaction than the youngest 2 (#6 is a big Burnham fan).

Daily bunny no.3459 is getting ready
A couple of bunnies haul a gigantic pumpkin home from a pumpkin patch, dragging it down the sidewalk in an old-fashioned red toy wagon. A third bunny rolls a smaller pumpkin sideways along the sidewalk just behind them

Even now it's kind of amazing how resistant so many Democrats have been to all of those. It definitely makes you feel like for some of them their first constituency is donors and lobbyists and talking with the people they're supposed to represent is a pretty low priority.

Weirdly the Iran war is more pushing people in the US lightly towards one another than pulling them apart. For once there's multiple issues that a lot of people on the left and right agree about. The Iran war, data centers, mass surveillance is bad, AI is bad, stop funding Israel, etc.

Which makes sense. I mean tons of people hated Vietnam but actually a large number of people were publicly extremely supportive of it too. That was kind of the problem with it that made it so divisive.

Lacci @lacci.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
People keep saying the Iran war is the least popular war in the US since Vietnam, but actually that's kind of not true because we have decent data on people's opinions on Vietnam and it was more popular than the war in Iran has been.

Everyone understands "chef-led local micro kitchens" are literally just ghost kitchens right? They're a rebranding of ghost kitchens because everyone loathes ghost kitchens for wrecking even the pretense something positive or authentic might come out of or happen at a restaurant.

So my wonderful wife, @tekla.bsky.social, is one of the workers who was laid off Wednesday. The article is honestly too fair to A4TE leadership, who have handled this with a baffling level of hostility and callousness. And yes, they were notified with a one-sentence email starting “Dear Employee”

Workers fought to save jobs at a national trans rights group. Then came a one-sentence layoff email
Advocates for Trans Equality says a $2.4 million deficit forced painful cuts. Its union says management rejected alternatives that could have saved jobs.

We all have some ability to influence what happens, but I don't think anyone is really in control now or even necessarily able to figure out who the important actors are going to be.

Whatever happens we've been going into something new. And I don't know what it will be. It could be a long period of true authoritarianism, another refounding under some version of the 1789 constitution, or a really major fracture and an end or I guess something else.
