The level exit object is a giant bubble! And you need to peck it to pop it. Whoa, now you can actually complete levels! Music is temporary. #gamedev #indiedev

Here's the full progress heatmap, before and after.

Before rework, the bottom line segment is interrupted by the proximity to the point above.Screenshot of Thrush Editor, with a heatmap of progress, where red means more progress and blue mean less progress. I reworked the camera progress system a bit into a more intuitive approach, so it detects the closest line segment instead of the closest node. #gamedev #indiedev

I had to make a whole camera waypoint system to get this to work, since "progress" isn't always the same direction.

Camera now works with two players! The game will slightly prioritize the player closest to progress. If a player goes out of frame, they will fly-teleport to the other player. #gamedev #indiedev

I need something as a level exit object, like a flagpole or similar. Anyone got any suggestions? #gamedev #indiedev

Overworld multiplayer! Both players can move, but they always stick together. The player who presses a direction will lead, and the other will follow. #gamedev #indiedev

Some people have trouble reading pixel-fonts. I added an "accessible font" option, which renders text on top of the upscaled graphics at a higher resolution, native to your device! The font I'm using is Inclusive Sans, rendered using MSDF. Such a cool technique! #gamedev #indiedev #accessibility
Retro game screenshot featuring a fieldfare in a forest, with an example text in a pixel-font. The text reads "This is a quick example of some text, so you can compare legibility.
You need to gather 300 🪙 to win the game! Did you hear that??
You can also have colored text and it should just work. Maybe icons embedded in the text will look a bit silly with the accessible option, but I'm not gonna make vector graphics out of every icon 🙂. I hope you understand ❤️. I need to finish this game sometime...
Small text works too... 😐"Same screenshot as in the other image, except with a high-resolution font.

Selecting and placing road tiles manually sure is tedious! So I added a more convenient method. Now it's a breeze! #gamedev #indiedev

First look at the overworld editor! It shares a lot of code with the level editor, but it's a separate program. Basic stuff works, but I can't save/load yet, and obviously I need to make the overworld work in-game. #gamedev #indiedev

For some reason this part makes me laugh 😂 Should I keep this ceiling thnail in the finished game? #gamedev #indiedev

Not sure how exciting this is to anyone, but I added a couple of event script functions that can trigger other events, synchronously and asynchronously. Comparable to custom subroutines or functions. Yay! #gamedev #indiedev

Border boxes. Could come in handy some day! #gamedev #indiedev

Some levels will have a heart piece pickup (increasing your max life), but if you've already collected it and you revisit the level, you will get a heart and some coins instead. I think I accidentally made it super satisfying? #gamedev #indiedev

Added heart and coin pickups. Enemies can also drop these when they die. Suddenly it feels much more like a game?? #gamedev #indiedev

Added a health bar HUD.
Cropped retro video game screenshot showing a small pixel art HUD in the top-left corner, featuring a portrait of a fieldfare and three hearts in a row next to it, two of which are fully red and the last one is half-red half-black. The background contains the top portion of a tree, and the sky behind it.

And the last portal/transition type: doorways! I'll make the actual entrances look better later, don't worry. #gamedev #indiedev

Game design that players won't notice. If enemies are too close to the entry, they are secretly moved away a bit. #gamedev #indiedev

Working on portals/room transitions. There was a bit more to consider than I thought at first, but I got something here that I'm happy with. Gonna add doorways too. This video shows portals in all directions, and how it's gonna work with two players. I also updated the flap sound! #gamedev #indiedev

Small thing but I thought it was neat. I can now "place" the player anywhere when pressing the play button. Pressing play again will use the default start position. #gamedev #indiedev

Here's some more raycasting 3D. No, I'm not gonna have anything like this in the game.
020
Labbed @labbed.net · 07/02/2026
Now that I have a raycast, I just had to make a 3D-looking raycast first-person perspective test just for fun. But then I saw these "holes" in my raycast system, which I hadn't discovered before. So fooling around like that can be useful, too! #gamedev #indiedev

Labbed @labbed.net · 22/01/2026
I've been focusing on optimizing performance and fixing some collision bugs lately, perhaps not the most exciting thing for most of you. But here's some progress I can show! I added a buzz sound to the Bautafly, and some VFX and SFX when they start chasing you. #gamedev #indiedev
052
Labbed @labbed.net · 03/01/2026
I made the bautaflies keep a short distance from each other, otherwise they would all bunch up on the exact same spot. Wouldn't wanna break immersion like that! #gamedev #indiedev

It's just a simple animation with a noisy expanding circle, but there are several of them created during the enemy death animation, and some are darker. I also rotate and mirror them randomly, to make them less uniform. No fancy shader involved.

Labbed @labbed.net · 31/12/2025
Introducing: Bautafly! Yeah, a game where you can fly everywhere will obviously need some flying enemies. Otherwise you could pretty much just fly over everything. Oh, and also, you can now peck mid-air! #gamedev #indiedev
