Allons enfants de la Patrie, Le jour de Gloire est arrivé. Contre nous de la tyrannie, L'étendard sanglant est levé. #theLunarWar #BastilleDay 🇫🇷
The two NISO-class Laserstars of the French Space Forces from the Lunar War worldbuilding project, floating side by side in LEO. Nemesis is visible in the foreground, while Esnault-Pelterie is in the background. Notable is that this is the redesigned version of the ship, with much larger radiators, five one megawatt lasers, and a new (secret) engine that is mostly not visible here. There are some slight differences between Nemesis and REP, mainly the point defense being 200kW laser turrets on Nem and 35mm guns on REP, as well as the style of the rear-facing radar humps.

So missile defense is a big topic thanks to “Golden Dome” and it has a lot of arms control advocates up in arms. Although I think the admin is 1) dumb and 2) poisoning the well on BMD, this is a good time to consider Alvin Weinbergs idea of “Defense Protected Build Down”.

An oil painting I did based on a paper by Brian O'Leary about the merits of the Censorinus crater area as an ideal location for a Lunar mass driver, a device now known as a 'rail gun' that throws a stream of packets of Lunar material to a processing facility floating beyond the Lunar far side.
A portrayal of a real spot on the Moon that was selected as an optimum location for an electronic catapult to throw materials to a location called the L2 point. A Lunar base, catapult and excavated area are shown as minor 'scratches' on the pitted Lunar terrain at even this nearby vantage point. A stream of packets thrown from the Moon by the 'mass driver' heads off the frame at the bottom, and in the original longer work arches in a stream on its way to its destination far above the middle of the Lunar Far Side.

A Lunar base dedicated to mining Lunar materials might typically excavate roughly football field sized areas to a few meters depth. This sifted Lunar surface 'soil', or regolith, would be packed into standardized containers and thrown from the Moon by a long 'rail gun' like device called a 'mass driver'. These containers would be caught by a large structure 'hovering' above the Lunar farside at the L2 point. The 'quarry' for this regolith is a shallow rectilinearly bordered pit perhaps 3 meters deep and less than a kilometer in area.
One Lunar scheme I have heard of that would raise my esthetic hackles was a belt of solar panels covering the Equator of the Moon, with the solar power beamed through a suitable wavelength back to Earth. A kilometer wide disruption in the Lunar terrain would be visible in larger telescopes and objectionable to me. The likelihood of this is extremely small though, thanks to more practical options for utilizing such power. Practical is of course a relative term, if it doesn't violate laws of physics anything that can be built is in theory possible. In the case of Space based Solar Power, once large structures can be built primarily with space based resources it may begin to creep toward being competitive with other power sources.
Satellite Solar power would use kilometer scale solar panel bearing structures which would 'beam' the power to dedicated ground receiving stations with Microwave or laser transmission.

This digital rendering/painting attempts to reconstruct the view Apollo 12 had of the Eclipse of the Sun by Earth as they headed toward their re entry and splashdown. Based on their description at the time and on their photos. They found the sight one of the visual highlights of the mission.
The atmosphere of Earth vividly bends and filters sunlight passing through it. When the Sun was covered by Earth in the last hours before their return a luminous ring of light was seen, varying in brightness and color. As the Astronauts eyes dark adapted they could see moonlit clouds, lightning flashes, city lights and a bright reflection of the Moon dead center on the dark disk.
They had run out of color Hasselblad film by this time but captured frames on 16mm color and black and white 70 mm film. This reconstruction of how the sight may have appeared is based on their descriptions at the time and their photographs. To do the view justice a painted Earth would be lined by a backlit transparency of the atmosphere colors, the sight having a tremendous brightness range between the brightest part of the ring and the stars and inner Zodiacal light, which the dazzling atmosphere could tend to hide visually.

In preparing this image, I made a 'cloud map' for that day from satellite global weather maps I was kindly provided. This was used with my Earth 3D model and rendered from about the perspective the Apollo 12 crew would have had, with stars and planets as they would have appeared then.

The Apollo missions carried color transparency film and obtained many hand held images during their EVAs. Here I have taken a scan od such an image from the Apollo Flickr site and tried to obtain optimum color balance and tonal value from that source.

AV-233 “Goad to Days Lost”, a Titanian raptor, conducts a live fire exercise during a Miranda flyby, much to the anger of the Republic of Miranda.

These exercises are common, and while the Uranian media empires might stir the pot, there is no political appetite for war in these moons. Ultimately, this is military posturing. Though nations far from Uranus will no doubt speak of the “imminent Uranian war”, this action is hardly even escalatory. In a few weeks, Miranda will reply with it’s own show of force and the cycle will continue.

A war between these Kuiper Alliance factions would decimate the outer solar system economy… and cost millions of lives. A single warcraft like the Goad to Days Lost could obliterate a swath of Miranda. The Galilean Interceptor "Spirit of Io" surrounds herself with a full deployment of drones.A military rocket narrowly avoids decimation in he rings of Saturn, only to put themselves within range of an interceptor's lasers.A Galilean Federation military parade passes low over Ganymede. One of the main drivers for the second space race's momentum from the 2030s onwards has been the steady replacement of surface power infrastructure with Solar Power Satellites, and among the many designs out there, the Monolith-class SPS is the most common on American orbits.
A frontal view of the mentionned Monolith-class solar power satellite. It looks like a large sheet of dark reflective material, with white lined criss-crossing it. Below the sheet, a jungle of orange trusses, and on the far-side of the panel, a large structure made up of a large rectangular angled reflector and a big round white array.
