Get in losers, we're reinventing Narrow AI
Excerpt reads: "Smaller models fine-tuned for industries such as law and finance - or even individual companies - could make AI cheaper to run. Trained on specialist or proprietary data, they may require less computing power while outperforming general-purpose frontier models on narrow tasks."

Okay so why do I keep circling around to RDF and such? Let me tell you. Once upon a time, we dreamed of being able to ask computers natural language questions and having them spit back verified facts that required multi-domain traversal. To assert any kind of authority, the facts have to be encoded.

AP Stylebook warns against anthropomorphizing AI systems: “Avoid language that gives them human characteristics… Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.”
APStylebook @APStylebook

Artificial intelligence systems do not think, feel, want or understand. Avoid language that gives them human characteristics. This is called anthropomorphizing, when we ascribe human traits, emotions or behaviors to non-human things, such as animals or inanimate objects.
Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.

Hi, just because a software tells you it’s “reasoning” or “thinking” doesn’t mean it actually is. You won’t believe this but programmers can make software lie about what it does. Maybe programmers need more guardrails.

Kind of genius, a app that will let you use an old iPhone or iPad as file storage and webserver, git storage, Time Machine backup drive etc., plus door camera (if you want) (It's in beta rn and not yet out.) nasreborn.com

NAS Reborn: a network drive on your old iPhone
Turn a spare iPhone or iPad into a home network drive: Finder, the Files app, Windows and Time Machine over SMB. Optional web and S3 serving too.

It’s not “do good work and be successful.” It’s doing good work, talking about the work, figuring out how to get your work to the right people, accepting that good work is slower than bad work and finding a path through that anyways

ArXiV has a new LLM policy (Screenshots with alt text so you don’t have to click through to the other place and see all the stupid responses)
Attention @arxiv authors: Our Code of Conduct states that by signing your name as an author of a paper, each author takes full responsibility for all its contents, irrespective of how the contents were generated. 1/If generative AI tools generate inappropriate language, plagiarized content, biased content, errors, mistakes, incorrect references, or misleading content, and that output is included in scientific works, it is the responsibility of the author(s). 2/

We have recently clarified our penalties for this. If a submission contains incontrovertible evidence that the authors did not check the results of LLM generation, this means we can't trust anything in the paper. 3/The penalty is a 1-year ban from arXiv followed by the requirement that subsequent arXiv submissions must first be accepted at a reputable peer-reviewed venue. 4/

Examples of incontrovertible evidence: hallucinated references, meta-comments from the LLM ("here is a 200 word summary; would you like me to make any changes?"; "the data in this table is illustrative, fill it in with the real numbers from your experiments") end/

Meteorologists (incl @wmo-global.bsky.social), scientists and media seem to have found consensus on the fact that both Ocean Heat Content and NASA CERES satellite data show more than a doubling in global heat uptake. Those who've been downplaying this for years have been rather quiet the past week.
