"Today He who hung the earth upon the waters is hung upon the Cross."
Priest placing Christ on the cross during Great and Holy Friday.Great and Holy Friday service. Wide shot of the room and everyone holding candles. People following along in little booklets containing the 12 Gospel readings during the Good Friday service on Thursday evening. A crucifix in the middle of an Orthodox Church on Good Friday.

I've also been a couple times to other locations and regretted it. Seems I always accidentally park on the opposite side from the bathrooms and am forced to walk across the entire hellscape.

When I was regularly traveling to Chattanooga for work I would still top at the Buc-ee's exit but go to the Love's across the street. Empty, wonderful. Buc-ee's aint for me. It's for other people.

Themes:

- Nothing left to do but pray. Not in a bullshit "thoughts and prayers" kind of way, but in a profound and truer sense. A return to Eden. A desire to eat to commune with God, to eat to taste, rather than simply eat to live.

- Regarding all of today's chaos, how can I blame certain people when I myself have done nothing for the poor? I haven't loved those around me. I havent fasted. I haven't prayed.

- Our actions, or lack thereof, affect those around us in some sort of spiritual and mystical sense. Perhaps they affect even those people we hate. Maybe I share some responsibility for other's suffering after all. Maybe I am the one dropping the bombs.

- What is the purpose of faith if it's merely "hope" in something greater? People find hope in a lot of things. What makes this special? It has to require action. It has to cost something. It requires "carrying your cross." Maybe this is what makes our faith into truth.

Working on an article about faith. I always get extra religious during Holy Week and Easter.

Maybe I am speaking too much from my own personal experience. I am certainly not one to defend the Biden's, but I knew a couple people who made these issues their entire personality for a while. It was odd and annoying, but you could also kinda live with it.

I used to get so annoyed at libertarians for complaining about dumb stuff like Hunter Biden's laptop or when Joe Biden made airlines get rid of hidden fees. I would now love to return to those simpler times.

Started this last night. A book about growing up in the south and contemplating death? Sounds like a great Holy Week read to me! @rachaelmaddux.bsky.social

About to start C&P. I've read TBK and The Idiot, but never this. I hear this translation is good.

I'm at work constantly being annoyed but all I want to do is go home and read Chekhov. I just...like... can't even.

I finished reading Moby Dick early this morning. I then checked my phone for the first time today and saw the headline. Maybe the U.S. is the Pequod, and the whale is our hubris.

Peachtree Center Marta Station. Both trains pulling in. A person walking down a tunnel at Peachtree Center in Atlanta. The Bank of America building in midtown Atlanta with a streak of sunlight across the sky behind it. A man going down an escalator at Five Points station in Atlanta.

This is true. I was also surprised to see Ricky Martin. My wife and I were both like "is that.... no.... wait... is that Ricky Martin?" A real blast from the past. Haha.

Like I know a lot of people who voted for Trump and "love America" or whatever. They didn't say shit about this.

Yea I guess I am just curious as to who it actually was that was mad about it. Just felt so forced and manufactured. But the TPUSA folks specialize in manufactured outrage and division. I'm sure there were folks actually mad about it somewhere, I just didn't see it myself firsthand this time.

I actually have a fair mount of conservatives within my general orbit, and I didn't really hear any of them bitching about Bad Bunny. I thought he did a good job but I had never heard any of his music before and wouldn't have recognized him if he passed me on the street.

I guess I just don't care much about mainstream pop music. I don't listen to it and am not familiar with a lot of it. Deftones are about as mainstream as I get. Y'all let me know when they get the call.

kurtis @kurtismjohnson.me · 09/02/2026
I really don't want to jump in on all the manufactured outrage over nothing, but I genuinely don't know what its like to have a strong opinion on the half time show regardless of who is performing.

Also good, but the audiobook wasn't the best call. Zone out for one second while driving or running and I'm lost. Have had to read a couple chapter summaries after the fact to make sure I was following.

My kids are around other kids all the time. Extracurricular activities, baseball, track, etc. Been having some complicated conversations lately about ICE and our country's historical treatment of other people. Navigating that while trying not to make them completely doomer at 9 and 5yo is tricky. Ha

For sure. Like, I get we all love to dunk on tradwives and shit. Fair enough. But our public education system in the US, and the way funding is so unevenly distributed, isnt great. I want my kids to read and write well, be educated in arts, literature, etc. And yes, the civil rights movement.

Why tf am I even defending myself to internet strangers. Like seriously what is wrong with me.
010
kurtis @kurtismjohnson.me · 03/02/2026
I have defended public education ad nauseam to the 2 friends I have who oppose "govt education" or whatever. Homeschooling grew on me over time. I was nervous about it. Yes, I am also religious most days, so make of that what you wish. Not a factor in my reasoning. Schools in my area are bad, sadly.
100
kurtis @kurtismjohnson.me · 03/02/2026
You can roll your eyes, but I really am a supporter of public education. But I don't think it's unreasonable to note that our system is being intentionally dismantled and has a litany of issues of its own. And yes, I realize it takes an immense amount of privilege to be able to homeschool.
210
kurtis @kurtismjohnson.me · 03/02/2026
Opinions on homeschooling will be a similar trajectory to vaccines/wellness/etc but in the opposite direction. Lib hippies used to be the anti-vaxx essential oil people. The anti-homeschool crowd will be more open to it once TPUSA says you have to hang Bible verses in every classroom.

I get this sentiment. Bc yes, a lot of freaks homeschool for nefarious reasons. Not everyone though. Maybe my schools get better if I send my kids there. Maybe not. Maybe there isn't a simple fix that I can do alone. Its complex. Everyone is different. Blanket statements/laws don't always help.
