This is a fabulously entertaining interview which will make you smile as you read. The two pictures of Richard E Grant and Christine Baranski during their rehearsals of "Hay Fever" are lovely. And - oh, to have been a fly on the wall during *that* dinner party! www.theguardian.com/stage/2026/s...

Not making fun of the interviewee – she comes across as lovely – but the Guardian’s editorial choice – placing that headline and that surname right next to each other seems unlikely to be accidental – it has that vibe of have-your-cake-and-eat-it mischief with a safety-net of plausible deniability.

Decided to jump into #ScriptSky with both feet and both pages for #TwoPageTuesday to mark exactly 20 years to the day since an early draft of this won a Guardian comedy contest. With Trump-like opportunism, I'm updating my satirical and surreal sitcom “The Folks on the Hill” for our new Gilded Age!
Image of page 1 of a surreal and satirical sitcom script "The Folks on the Hill" by Kulvinder Gill. Transcript below:

OVER A GRAPHIC of a Stars-and-Stripes map of Britain...

SOUNDS of rioting, fading slowly - but long enough to notice England, Scotland and Wales are unified under the US flag - and Ireland and Northern Ireland are conspicuously absent.

NARRATOR (V.O.)
During this, the fourth term of the Trump presidency, the 54th State is under pressure as never before. Pensioners are protesting, parents demonstrating and the young - as always - are revolting... bless 'em. Faced with this existential threat, the President responds as only she can with the ultimate deterrent...

After two quick REVS of an electric drill...

NARRATOR (V.O.) (CONT'D)
Crucifixion!

EXT. CRUCIFIXION SITE - DAY

Hill-top crucifixion site - not biblical, modern, futuristic even - with razor wire, towers, search beam equipped drones.

The just crucified NEW BOY - a young white guy in a pristine orange jumpsuit - is secured to the crossbar by a large shiny factory-fresh Phillips "cross head" screw through each wrist.

Somewhat more incongruously, the New Boy has a cigar in his left hand - but despite his luxury item, he looks downcast.

OLD LAG (O.S.)
(chirpy cockney)
First time is it?

The New Boy, startled, looks around at the nearby crosses - but seeing only decaying bodies - he shrugs his shoulders.

OLD LAG (O.S.) (CONT'D)
I said, is it your first time?

The New Boy looks around again but still can't see anyone.

OLD LAG (O.S.) (CONT'D)
Behind you!

The New Boy looks over his left shoulder but still nothing.

OLD LAG (CONT'D)
Not that side - your other side!

The New Boy looks over his right shoulder and is confronted by the OLD LAG - a bearded, unkempt, elderly black man.

The Old Lag is crucified on the other side of the cross!Page 2 transcript below:

NEW BOY
(middle-class accent)
What the-- who the trump are you?

OLD LAG
Allow me to introduce myself.
(in French accent)
I am "Le Grand Jean-Pierre - Escapologist Extraordinaire".
(back to cockney)
Forgive me if I don't shake hands.

The Old Lag laughs at his little joke.

OLD LAG (CONT'D)
A little gallows humour there. To lighten the mood. Break the ice.

NEW BOY
What are you doing on my cross?

OLD LAG
Your cross! You got a bleedin' nerve Sonny. I offer the hand of friendship - metaphorical though it may be - and you claim squatter's rights! Listen, you cheeky git - you can forget that white entitlement nonsense - I was 'ere first and don't you forget it.

NEW BOY
Sorry - no offence intended - just not quite sure I get the set-up here.

OLD LAG
You're my other half. Not the better half, I flatter myself - hey Roomie!

NEW BOY
What?

OLD LAG
Blimey, you are slow on the uptake. It's the latest deficit reduction plan innit. Gotta pay for The Walls somehow - n'est pas? So - yeah, we've all gotta double up.

NEW BOY
You mean share?

OLD LAG
Yep, it's two to a cross these days.

For the second time in as many weeks, I’ve binged all six episodes of a one-hour drama, only to see the dreaded “To be continued...” at the end of the (as it turns out, not quite) final ep with a likely year wait for the next series on Freeview. That’s one spoiler, I’d like to have known in advance.

Rewind TV (Freeview 81) is repeating (IMO) the best Sixties ITC show “Man in a Suitcase” starring method actor Richard Bradford as an unfairly dismissed/blacklisted ex-intelligence agent working as a bounty hunter/troubleshooter in the UK and Europe. Cynical, gritty with a great feem toon. Noon/8pm.

The 2026-27 Mentoring Scheme is Now Open!
Our free one-to-one mentoring programme for writers opens on 3rd June 2026 and closes 5th August 2026.
What is the Mentoring Scheme?
The Mentoring Scheme matches 8 emerging writers who live, work or study in the East Midlands with experienced, professional writing mentors for a year of free, dedicated craft and career guidance while they work towards publication of a specific writing project. The goal of the scheme is to support writers in reaching the next stage of their career—whether that is traditional publication of a novel, a spoken word performance debut or premiering a film script—through one-to-one mentorship from an established writer, exclusive writing masterclasses and peer feedback.

What does the Mentoring Scheme offer?
Over one year, up to 10 chosen mentees will be awarded: 5 mentoring sessions with a professional writer, matched based on their needs; 3 peer network meetings with their mentoring cohort; 3 masterclasses, tailored to the interests of the group; and free attendance to The Writers’ Conference 2027.
