not surprising this goes back decades. from this research: They knew the issue, knew of options to reduce methane. Instead of making changes, they 'minimized cattle’s contribution to global warming, and challenged the credibility of advocates promoting dietary change' news.miami.edu/rosenstiel/s...

Archival research shows how a cattle industry group used public relations to counter early climate concerns.

When I was brand new at FC I got pitched a National Cattlemen's Beef Association white paper outlining the 'minimal environmental footprint of beef production in the US' and immediately called up @worldresources.bsky.social to get a sustainable food experts take: www.fastcompany.com/90431910/the...

Just like Exxon knew about the impacts of climate change, the beef industry knew too. A new PLOS Climate study documents how the National Cattlemen’s Association (NCA), now NCBA, responded to evidence linking cattle methane to global warming from 1986–1996 (study 🔗 at end of 🧵)

Yesterday, this part of setting up a Teams meeting just said 'Find a room." you clicked on it, it showed you a list of which office rooms were available. Now we all have Copilot Premium, and suddenly its "Add a room with Copilot." why do I need copilot to do this now? Why does this need AI at all?
A screenshot of Microsoft Teams that shows the interface when trying to schedule a meeting. At the top is the date and time, then a toggle that says "If conflicts arise, let Copilot reschedule this event." Then next to a location icon, it says "Add a room with Copilot" and below that, a toggle to add a Teams meeting link

lots of talk yesterday about how AI companies are 'gambling with their lives.' But 'superintelligence' isn't the only threat—so is the rampant fossil fuel use and air pollution from powering AI www.fastcompany.com/91604660/yes...

My lukewarm take on 1.5 stories is that climate is only one of many reasons to phase out fossil fuels, and probably not in the top two reasons for most people. We should do it regardless, to save millions of lives per year from air pollution, reduce exposure to high and volatile fossil prices, and..

Global warming beyond Paris Agreement targets is now a given, UN says. Experts say it should be a call to action, not apathy.
A UN report reveals that our planet will likely surpass 1.5°C within a few years. Some climate experts worry it does a poor job of showing us the way forward.

Kristin Toussaint @ktoussaint.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
I guess it's true semantically that limiting warming in that way protects us from all the worst impacts beyond that level of warming, but yeah that description really fails when we talk about missing that goal and what to do next
120
Kristin Toussaint @ktoussaint.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
also why a lot of this framing can lead people to throw their hands up about climate change—we missed that target, oh well. but every bit of action still matters!!

Kristin Toussaint @ktoussaint.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
I was thinking about this when I covered that report. Out of almost muscle memory—from seeing it so often?—I almost wrote that, but of course that's not true. 1.5C comes with intense impacts, sure (the phrasing I opted for), but every bit of additional warming comes with *even more* intense impacts

People increasingly see extreme wealth as contributing to an unfair society, and that sentiment is especially high with Gen Z and millennials.
