While I understand the economics behind it I can’t quite get behind paying £40 to go see a so called “Sarbojanin” (public) Durga Puja. Where it’s not possible to organize such events cheaply I think the spirit of it is quite lost

Also, fwiw, I find ancient Greek individuality easy to overstate: only for adult citizen males, of course, but also even citizens really didn't have any rights the community was bound to respect. It's an individualistic society by pre-modern standards, but I wouldn't say fiercely so.

Unlike you can recite three Old English poems in the original you aren’t culturally English.

Well by my random standards anyone who can’t identify Maggie Hambling’s tribute to Britten isn’t culturally British enough so you may all get into the sea.

(FWIW, one of the reasons I objected to ideas like “cultural appropriation” is this idea that identities are always static and preserved in amber. Guys, culture changes, national identities change, give over you silly people)

Cops are calling society elders and asking them to not let their kids go for the protest on 10th oct. India is seeing something, and I hope unlike Indian Media the international media is more vocal about it.

Explanation for any non- Hindi speaking followers: it means “final” or “last”. She’s a fourth daughter with three older sisters. This is a common superstition followed by families who want a son.

I personally am very opposed to grinding flour, cooking it or mixing it with eggs or yeast. It should be left in as natural a state as possible and consumed directly as ears of wheat.

This line of thinking finally leads to “college-going women in Delhi are at risk of assault in parks after 4 pm, so let’s lock up the parks and move women’s college classes online” (This is happening as we speak btw)

One of the frustrations about "engineering" as a discipline is that the heart of the actual discipline is about taking care to make sure things work within specifications and requirements, but tech industry gender politics has characterised engineering as a work of disruption and disregard.

Archer’s scandals were not over yet. A year after his release, he was accused by Equatorial Guinea’s government of co-financing the failed 2004 coup d’etat attempt.
