I was just thinking about two shows I liked from 2004 with similar total runtime that approached the same concept of technology and long distance relationships but very differently, capturing a specific moment in time. NY-LON and Noah & Saskia.
Post for 2004 series NY-LON, showing Rashida Jones and Stephen Moyer in New York.Poster for 2004 series Noah and Saskia, showing the titular leads, their avatars and imagined versions in a semi circle. They stand over the globe with the tagline, "who do you want to be?"

Good afternoon. Too hot to do much so getting ahead on 1971 review reading, with Candy Man by Vincent King. So far very New Wave SF, post-apocalyptic Earth, surrealism, people without names, detatched narration etc.

What an excellent idea, of course a Prime Minister should be chosen behind closed doors by a small elite, rather than a public debate and membership vote. In fact, why bother with a full election every 4 years? MPs clearly know what is best for everyone else and should be elected for life!
Guardian Live Text
Harriet Harman says Labour MPs, not party members, should choose next leader
Harriet Harman, the former Labour deputy leader, has said that she thinks Labour MPs, and not party members, should choose the next leader.

The party’s rules say, if there is a contest, all members get a vote.

But Harman told the Today programme this morning that, with the party in power, MPs should take the decision. She said:

The way you get to be prime minister, and the way you govern the country, is by having the support of the majority of party in parliament. So whoever’s prime minister has to have the support of Labour MPs.

And I think what should happen is that the three contenders – which is obviously Keir Starmer, who’s the prime minister, Andy Burnham, who’s the challenger, and Wes Streeting, who’s also a challenger – should be got in a room by the deputy leader of the Labour Party, Lucy Powell, and the chair of the parliamentary Labour party, Jess Morden, to agree a process whereby the Labour MPs choose who they they want.

I think it often gets overlooked as silly but actually is one of his deepest, looking at how media and culture, both global news and gaming, affect young people and the pliable nature of reality. It in many ways seems influenced by Jean Baudrilliard's The Gulf War Did Not Take Place.

Whenever I try to avoid the horror of the current world, my brain goes to musing on adaptations. Today I was thinking about Only You Can Save Mankind by Terry Pratchett. Even though the first part of the Johnny Maxwell Trilogy, it is the only one yet to be adapted for screen.

Really weird moment on UK broadcast of Daily Show, anyone have any idea why? Was this in all regions or something specific to Comedy Central UK?

Good morning harbinger of books. I am on my second anthology to review for the month, Science Against Man by Anthony Cheetham. Whilst, for my own reading, I am getting back to Shogun by James Cavell before watching the show.

1. Cold Fusion - Lance Parkin: The best VNA and best VMA at the same time, as these stories collide in the best way. Parkin deftly handles complex time travel, gallifreyian history, a huge host of characters, fun concepts and an assortment of ideas without ever losing track. A true masterpiece.

Kris Vyas-Myall @krisvm.bsky.social · 01/02/2026
2. The Dying Days - Lance Parkin: A marvellous end to the Doctor's adventures with the VNAs and definitely the most thrilling. In the old who tradition of taking disperate elements to make something new, this is War of the Worlds meets House of Cards, and surprisingly enjoyable for it.

3. Continuity Errors - Steven Moffat: Whilst Damaged Goods is pure RTD, this is pure Moff. In a short space we get to see the effects of time travel, moral questions raised, brilliant character work and deft writing. Amazing stuff.

Kris Vyas-Myall @krisvm.bsky.social · 01/02/2026
4. No Future - Paul Cornell: Conclusion of the Alt-History arc and, for me, the true turning point of the series. This is where the angst largely vanishes and it is about 3 equals learning balance and trust. Plus such beautiful themes and ideas, I just adore it.

Kris Vyas-Myall @krisvm.bsky.social · 01/02/2026
5. Set Piece - Kate Orman: Beautiful exit for Ace. No angst, no screaming, no marrying her off to a random bloke. Instead true character growth and a tickle fight. Add into this beautiful writing style and it makes me grin from ear to ear.

Kris Vyas-Myall @krisvm.bsky.social · 01/02/2026
6. Theatre of War - Justin Richards: The first Doctor Who novel that stands up as a great piece of fiction on its own. This explores powerful themes with brilliant character work and great scares. Highly recommended even if you are not a Doctor Who fan.
131
Kris Vyas-Myall @krisvm.bsky.social · 01/02/2026
7. Timewyrm: Revelation - Paul Cornell: At its heart this is an exploration of The Doctor and his guilt and fears, establishing him as both more mythic and more human than he was before. Truly wonderful.
131
Kris Vyas-Myall @krisvm.bsky.social · 01/02/2026
8. Conundrum - Steve Lyons: This is a brilliant, funny and clever book, that makes full use of the form and Doctor Who's history to really create a unique tale. It is for these kind of books that I remember why I enjoy reading the Virgin era.
130
Kris Vyas-Myall @krisvm.bsky.social · 01/02/2026
9. Love and War - Paul Cornell: Beautiful, poetic, tragic and horrifying. A zombie novel mixed with cyberpunk, kitchen sink drama and poetic symbolism. If you want one book to understand what the VNAs were all about, this is probably the one to go for.
131
Kris Vyas-Myall @krisvm.bsky.social · 01/02/2026
10. Human Nature - Paul Cornell: Do I really need to explain this one? Rightly lauded and a comforting joy.
141
Kris Vyas-Myall @krisvm.bsky.social · 01/02/2026
11. Blood Harvest - Terrance Dicks: Such an entertaining double-hander, with Benny doing vampire archeology and Ace and Doctor doing a gangster movie. It is one of my comfort reads.
251
Kris Vyas-Myall @krisvm.bsky.social · 01/02/2026
12. The Also People - Ben Aaronovitch: Possibly the most pleasant of all the VNAs. In a kind of inverse cabin scenario, the TARDIS team get to hang out in a utopia as a way to explore and learn about themselves. Effortlessly charming.
151
Kris Vyas-Myall @krisvm.bsky.social · 01/02/2026
13. System Shock - Justin Richards: Doctor Who does a 90s technothriller, which Richards does with such style and panache it is hard not to be constantly entertained.
140
Kris Vyas-Myall @krisvm.bsky.social · 01/02/2026
14. Blood Heat - Jim Mortimore: Start of the Alt-History arc taking us into a dark "what if the Doctor failed" timeline. Really complex exploration and considers real consequences.
121
Kris Vyas-Myall @krisvm.bsky.social · 01/02/2026
15. Damaged Goods - Russell T. Davies: Dark and angry story with real character work. Even if not all plot points are fully resolved I also don't really mind. In other words, pure RTD.
121
Kris Vyas-Myall @krisvm.bsky.social · 01/02/2026
16. Nightshade - Mark Gatiss: The first standlone adventure in the series and it produces an amazingly complex and deep character tale. Dark and depressing but never feels gratuitous.
111
Kris Vyas-Myall @krisvm.bsky.social · 01/02/2026
17. Bad Therapy - Matthew Jones: Whilst a lot of books in this period cover The Doctor and Chris' grief, this is by far the best, giving them seperate adventures and exploring complex social issues at the same time.
211

18. The Trials of Tara - Paul Cornell: Doctor and Benny do Shakespeare. Wonderful short adventure clevely written.
