I think an underrated driver of historical events and trends is boredom with the status quo. An ideology may be excellent but people will get tired of the same old narrative after a while. Taking it further, a peace may be prosperous but people will want some conflict in the end to spice things up.

I would add this: As long as European politicians do not start preparing their electorate for a real possibility of a military intervention in Ukraine russia knows it has free reign. Once European leaders start with that, russia will understand it’s on the clock and has 3-6 months left.

Thinking outside the box, an US takeover of Greenland may well be good for Europe in the long run. It would end NATO as it is, and force Europe to take complete control of our security. Now would be a good time for that. What's best for Greenlanders though, I don't know. Independence, probably.
