TODAY: New SNAP cuts are kicking in because of Trump's "Big Beautiful Bill." 5 million people have already lost food assistance, including 1.5 million+ kids since the bill was enacted. No kid deserves to go hungry so Trump can give his billionaire buddies another tax handout.

**Lights Out Alert Sunday & Monday Nights** Birdcast is estimating 300-400 million birds will be in flight.
From meteorologist Eric Snitil

**Lights Out Alert Sunday & Monday Nights**

"Heads up birders, I would not be surprised if the biggest bird migration night of the year happens over the next 2 nights. Birdcast is estimating 300-400 million birds will be in flight. That is a lot, but the pattern could not be better for migratory birds. A massive area of high pressure will turn the low level winds from the northeast to the southwest across most of the US. The last time we had anything similar to this in the fall was early October last year when a record 1.25 billion birds were in flight. I doubt we get to that level, but I suspect the number will top 500 million especially Monday night which looks to be the bigger of the two nights. You can help by turning off those outdoor lights on big migration nights, and the next 2 nights is about as big as it gets."

AI billionaire-funded Super PACs will spend millions in the home stretch of the midterms to crush the anti-data center revolt in battleground states. And that's just a drop in the bucket compared to how much these oligarchs would rake in from the AI takeover.

This needs way more attention. The U.S. Postal Service has built a new system that could effectively turn USPS into a gatekeeper for mail-in ballots. Here are the details on how it is supposed to work.

The image is of a four panel comic.
The first panel shows Sarah, the protagonist, as a child. Off panel, someone says to her, “Enjoy your youth!”
The second panel shows child Sarah again, now frowning. The person off panel continues, saying “After you’re 30 you’ll be old and your life will basically be over.”
Before the last two panels there is text that reads “LIFE AFTER I TURNED 30.”
The third panel shows adult Sarah opening a door.
The fourth panel shows the door opens to a beautiful field with flowers, a rainbow, and a pond. Sarah says “Wait what.”

It’s been a joy illustrating covers for the Race to the Truth series so I’m excited to share that two more books are on the way. 🙂 Boarding Schools and the Indigenous Story and Displacement and the Palestinian American Story hit shelves in Aug and Sep. #kidlit #mglit #bookcover #illustration
Book cover for “Race to the Truth: Boarding Schools and the Indigenous Story” by Ashley Fairbanks. Illustration of a Native American girl sitting in a wooden chair, looking to the side with a wary yet determined expression, while a white adult cuts off her long dark braid with scissors. Book cover for “Race to the Truth: Displacement and the Palestinian American Story” by Alana Hadid and Jenan A. Matari. Illustration of a girl with curly dark hair wearing a white and red embroidered thobe, holding an old iron key. Background shows a refugee camp with tents and trees, in soft green tones.

Keep this in mind as we start seeing more and more large scale outages from AWS, Cloudflare, Github, etc. These are the companies hoping to increasingly automate their systems with AI
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automation
Paradox of automation
edit
The paradox of automation says that the more efficient the automated system, the more crucial the human contribution of the operators. Humans are less involved, but their involvement becomes more critical. Lisanne Bainbridge, a cognitive psychologist, identified these issues notably in her widely cited paper "Ironies of Automation."[49] If an automated system has an error, it will multiply that error until it is fixed or shut down. This is where human operators come in.[50] A fatal example of this was Air France Flight 447, where a failure of automation put the pilots into a manual situation they were not prepared for.[51]
