AFSCME Local 1110 is ON STRIKE! At 6 a.m., more than 300 building service, dining service, grounds workers at Illinois State University walked off the job. They’re striking for dignity, respect and a wage they can actually live on—and they’re prepared to stand strong for as long as it takes.

New tactic for (birthday) mail from folks who should know better: read it with a black marker in hand to redact all the places where they use the wrong name and such, while shaking my head about how silly they were to "forget." Definite mood improver. 10/10, can recommend.

In the midst of so much else that is terrible in our world right now, this, too, is a heartbreak.

I work hard to create space for students to be excited and enthusiastic about how they use grammar and punctuation in their writing. (Not a small feat, I think.) And AI—and the many tendrils of its consequences—attempts to suffocate all of those attempts, day in and day out.

Kris Lewis @krislewisphd.bsky.social · 21/10/2025
And then we talked about how some of them are scared to experiment with em dashes in their writing because professors treat them as red flags for AI. I promised them that if I ever accuse them of using AI, it won't be because they used em dashes. (That's never yet been the tell for me.)

Today, some of my students did a fabulous job teaching their classmates—students studying English, creative writing, and technical writing—how to use em dashes and en dashes correctly and effectively.

It sure is some sort of mind trip to go from thinking you're underpaid just because you're in an undervalued department (still true) to realizing that you're also significantly underpaid compared to folks hired after you in that same department. Tell me again how my department cares about DEIJ?

Hey, look: my university is hiring in TESOL/bilingual ed. But because this position is in the school of ed (not arts & sciences), you'd make more money and have significantly better resources than me. Fun times.

New pub alert: How do Russian language learning materials (textbooks and a digital app) for verbs of motion align (or not) with principles of second language acquisition? Showcasing the thesis work of my first MA student, Elena Petrova. Part of a special issue on teaching Russian verbs of motion.
scholarsarchive.byu.edu
A Pedagogical Analysis of How Unprefixed Verbs of Motion are Presented in Instructional Materials for Beginner Russian Language Learners
It is well-known that verbs of motion (VoM) are quite challenging for Russian language learners. We analyze four VoM-specific pedagogical materials (three textbooks and one mobile application) for their usefulness in supporting second language acquisition and the development of new thinking-for-speaking (TFS) patterns in beginner-level Russian language learners. Focusing on directionality, scaffolding, comprehensible input, the use of visuals, and communicative activities, we highlight how these materials lay a foundation for understanding VoM but are not sufficient for helping learners fully develop new TFS patterns. We pose recommendations for future research, teaching, learning, and materials development in the area of Russian VoM.

This week (4 weeks post-op), I messaged my surgeon's office because I've just been feeling AWFUL, and I wondered if that was normal. Abdominal pain, fatigue, depression, brain fog. I can't *do* anything. Some days I can't even sit up for very long or go for a short walk outside.

I have often wished for these kinds of mentors, both when I was a doctoral student and now as an assistant prof. Now, I'm trying to balance protecting myself (sometimes from the very same folks who *should* be protecting me) and doing better by those coming up behind me.

Come hear us explore the interesting ways that mentors go beyond simple positive assessments by providing rationales for their praise or recounting specific things that novice teachers did and said in their observed lessons. We'll suggest that these practices can work to model reflective practice.

If you've made it this far and need a takeaway... Get screened for cancer (often and in whatever ways your healthcare provider recommends for you and your personal/family history). Vote for politicians who will expand (not strip) healthcare coverage for everyone and everything.

Kris Lewis @krislewisphd.bsky.social · 16/01/2025
I don't feel sad about this. I am a little stressed about medical leave, though I've planned for my courses and everything else can wait. I mostly feel glad that I can make this choice, that for now insurance will cover it, and that I have supportive people I can rely on in the recovery phase.

Kris Lewis @krislewisphd.bsky.social · 16/01/2025
So now I'm doing something about it. Doing surgery now means doing it on my own timeline, doing it before I flip a switch that can never be flipped back (cancer goes into remission, you never "didn't have cancer" again). By this time next week, my breast cancer risk should be about 90% lower.
110
Kris Lewis @krislewisphd.bsky.social · 16/01/2025
Every year, my risk goes up. The likelihood that I will develop breast cancer by the time I'm 70 is something like 75%. Other cancers too. As I get older, as my risk grows, as I watch more and more family members fight cancer, my brain has started to read that 75% as "pretty much inevitable."
100
Kris Lewis @krislewisphd.bsky.social · 16/01/2025
The MRIs were worse. Something about holding that position so long used to trigger a migraine every single time. But I'm glad I could access screening. I've only been called back a few times (including a scary month last year), but it's stressful every time.

Kris Lewis @krislewisphd.bsky.social · 16/01/2025
I've been asked if it's my "first time" for a mammogram more times than I can count, but no, I started getting them in my mid-20s, back when my doctor had to put in a special request with my insurance every single year to prove that I was (still) high-risk and (still) needed screening so young.
100
Kris Lewis @krislewisphd.bsky.social · 16/01/2025
I've lived with this information for a long time, almost half my life. When I was first test, they weren't doing panel tests yet, at least not regularly. I was tested for a specific point mutation because others in my family had that specific mutation, because relatives I didn't know died too young.

Kris Lewis @krislewisphd.bsky.social · 16/01/2025
Eighteen years ago, between graduating from college and starting to teach English abroad, I learned that I carry a genetic mutation that greatly increases my lifetime risk of certain cancers, including breast cancer. Five days from now, I'm scheduled for a prophylactic bilateral mastectomy.
