This is a gift commission I made for my friend @kret.bsky.social for his enduring support on Patreon these past few years, for which he requested a domesticated breed from @cmkosemen.bsky.social's Snaiad. This is Jak's Hag-Apple, a domesticated triggerback breed.
Jak's Hag-Apple, a breed of domesticated triggerback (Sifteria rotunda*) from C.M. Kosemen's Snaiad. This was made as a gift commission from me, Kyre Fiskrof, to Jakub Bobrowicz, a friend and patron.

* This was an error; the species is actually, per the official Snaiad web pages, Sifteria rotundus — though the specific epithet doesn't agree with the gender of the generic name and should be Sifteria rotunda.

Detailed description:
Its body nearly as round as a basketball, with a size and color to match. It has an upward-curving beak, serrated with rounded "teeth" towards the end with a broadened, recurved end at the lower "jaw"; this is not a mouth, but a genital sheath for protecting genitalia located in the face. It's actual mouth normally tucked deeply into the chest: a red proboscis covered in many hairs and whiskers at the tip and has a slender sensory tentacle on the lower jaw. Its face has a pair of well-squinted eyes and has a faded black stripe from the eyes from the eye to the base of the beak.

It has four limbs: a pair of short, two-clawed arms and a pair of thick feet with two hoofed toes each, covered in scutes; rectangular ones on the dorsal aspect of each toe, and circular scutes on the sides. Near the armpits are a pair of breathing orifices, from which sounds could also be emitted.

Other noteworthy features include a short, round tail covered with black, pimple-like spots, the eponymous curved "trigger" — a spike running down the back to the mid-length of the tail, and some short, faint hairs covering most of the body.

The illustration is bordered by geometric square patterns with crossing lines in roughly the Slavic tradition.

POTENTIAL PASTS: Blurring the line between speculative evolution and palaeontology, I'm designing a selection of hypothetical taxa that could have existed in prehistory! A close relative of Aquilops, this animal is an aquatic bottom-punting generalist with nostrils placed high on the nasal horn.
A drawing of a basal ceratopsian dinosaur with long, spreading toes and a deep tail. Its hide is blotchy and dotted. Beside it is a human silhouette, showing it to be similar in size to a mid-sized dog. Text above the dinosaur reads "Amphibious Basal Ceratopsian, Early Cretaceous - Aptian, Western North America"

Given the chance, would you rather travel to the deep past or the far future (many millions of years either way)?

My attempt at a more biologically grounded Groot, re-imagined as a species of lumbering insect-cycad creatures that eat wood. The official design, while iconic, is not alien enough for my taste. And yes, I am hopelessly addicted to Marvel Rivals.

I'm kret, and I draw #aliens, #speculativeevolution, and #dinosaurs Here's Allan from #smilingfriends re-imagined as a species of one eyed flounder-headed reptilian biped. Like all critterzoans, the head is flat with eyes on one side and respiratory orifices on the other:

SPEC EVO DESIGN TIP: When creating large organisms, it is not enough to just linearly scale up your little creatures. Big animals have robust limbs, weight saving adaptations, larger guts, thicker skin, etc., to deal with a huge increase in mass.

SPEC EVO DESIGN TIP: This is Snood, the little mammal-thing I've been using in my speculative evolution design tips. Let's give him a face lift by collecting reference materials from nature. The more detail you add to your creatures, the realer they will look.

SPEC EVO DESIGN TIP: Once you notice the "sausage with legs" design, you cannot unsee it. It's a common speculative evolution creature design trope. In nature, animal bodies are organized in segments. Ditch the sausage: group limbs together, and add more detail to torso/abdomen/joints.

Realistic Pokémon! Lotad, a small pseudo-mammalian aquatic herbivore. Its most distinctive feature is a broad dorsal crest. This air-filled structure serves two purposes: boosting buoyancy as Lotad skim for vegetation, and serving as a lily-pad disguise for befuddling potential predators.

Speculative evolution concept: woodpecker-pachycephalosaur. This stout dinosaur pulverizes rotten bark with its chisel-shaped skull, probing the cavities for wood-boring insects. Thick arms and a flat torso give it an ideal build for shimmying up tree trunks.
