"Water Music" reviewed by @derekwalmsley.bsky.social in the latest issue of @thewiremagazine.bsky.social
"Kraus: Water Music

Artsy DL/MC

You hear familiar patterns in a lot of solo synthesizer music, especially after the resurgence of modular systems: neat glistening globules of sound, flurries of arpeggios, and lots of hypnotic repetition. It can be enchanting but also carry the air of a technical demonstration, with echoes of a prodigious young pianist demonstrating their scales for teacher. What makes the music of New Zealand's Pat Kraus distinctive is an emotional directness, a frankness that manifests in wistful melodic lines that wander and pause, all of it carrying a compellingly human sense of agency and vulnerability."
"The inspirations behind Water Music, which was made with an analogue and digital pair of Elektron synthesizers, include birds, forests, gardens, the music of Francesco Cavaliere and the films of George A Romero. The album cover shows a little hut at the shore of an idyllic lake, but a blue dome and pyramid-shaped snowy mountains in the background give an uncanny sense of dream logic or (inevitably) the unsettling juxtapositions of AI.

"Home In The Mountains" and "The Floating World" use the same formula of a...""repeating pattern cycling through different chords underneath, and a lingering, solo line, perhaps improvised, over the top. It's the kind of charming economical format you hear on the intro scheme to a computer game, and there's a strong echo of the micro symphonies of Artsy labelmate Maiju Jouppi's 2023 album Of Epic Proportions. Titles like "Century Of The Elf", "Princess From The Moon" and "The Woodcutter's Tale" deepen the vibe of a fantasy or computer game realm, the latter suggesting an outtake from the Commodore Amiga's Shadow Of The Beast universe."

"Back in the 2000s Kraus's music emerged on DIY labels like Ultra Eczema and Celebrate Psi Phenomenon, and was encrusted with cheap distortion units and tape murk. Since then, his music has evolved a kind of intimate, fragile beauty, and like The Skaters, he's become an expert at producing unearthly exoticism from the most modest of means. The emotion of Water Music is all the more moving for being hard won.

Derek Walmsley"

"You could be forgiven for thinking that Sheeran had been dropped from his tour for not being pro-Palestinian enough. But of course he wasn’t... It is Macklemore, not Sheeran, who has been barred from performing. Yet somehow the story is about Sheeran’s freedom to be apolitical."

Jon Bywater describes Water Music as evoking "worlds in which nature is miniature and intimate, technology soft and fluid, and the uncanny gentle rather than frightening. In this enchanted ecology, solitude becomes a habitat for creativity and folklore bleeds into domestic life."

I've decided against putting the album on Spotify etc. Apart from the fact that I wouldn't see a cent in payment, I've also come to dislike their whole model of renting music by subscription. I'd honestly rather you hit me up for a free download - at least then you'd own a copy of the music!

I’m getting really into this anime that is romance of the three kingdoms but instead of kings and generals fighting it’s girls humping pillows and instead of watching it on a screen it’s flashing in my mind as I look at the smoke in the sky and bleed out near the Somme river in August 1916
