The Gravity Suit being active usually signals late-game Super Metroid, so it's kind of jarring to get it so early. I also didn't record the tight wall jump needed to get past the Ice Beam enemies for Power Bombs, which is itself pretty cool

Honestly, the main roadblock for me was knowledge: the wall jump in the water room works based on the momentum you went into the room with, so you just need to press the jump button at the right time. No D-Pad trickery required

You have to do this for every game over until Phantoon is dead. I highly recommend getting at least 2 Super Missile upgrades, because just 5 of them will get it down. The Charge Beam is on the way (though optional) and trivializes the Super Missile anger phase for an easier fight

I found out that there's a trick to get the Gravity Suit really early in Super Metroid. It's pretty hard and you have to defeat Phantoon without saving, but also really nice to get down

Knowing that a game will have unfair setbacks and being prepared to lose everything in an instant almost completely nullifies any kind of frustration I would otherwise have. It's weirdly nice to get killed unfairly and just shrug it off

I also received very wise advice a long time ago: your patience with a game is based on your expectations for how patient you will need to be with it

It's really hard to describe, but there's something about playing on the original NES that gives me the motivation to complete NES-level challenges

Also, I have a general tip for the optimal NES experience: try your best to play on the original console. It's unfortunately a lot tougher to do now than when I started, but there are still good deals out there, I'm sure

I'm honestly starting to think Castlevania III might be one of my favorite games even outside of the NES. It's really satisfying to complete and I still highly recommend the NES version over the Famicom just because repeat playthroughs will still be a fun challenge

It's honestly a massive shame that the double-shot isn't guaranteed to spawn anywhere in the last checkpoint. It's a pretty fun fight with two-shot crosses, since otherwise your cross throws need to be almost perfect to avoid getting hit by the damned sickles

Steven Trevathen @kopper0625.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
I also took on Castlevania 1, which is a joke in comparison. I did make things a bit harder for myself by screwing up the Death holy water stun, so I ended up fighting him with the crosses for the first time. Got lucky with an upgrade drop and barely got through with them
Screenshot of Castlevania for the NES. Simon Belmont, a warrior clad in a lightweight set of armor, stands near the center of the screen on top of a platform. The scene is in profile, and a floating sickle can be seen to the left of Simon. The HUD at the tops shows the cross as the current sub-weapon, at level 2.

The strategy is to get the axe at the first checkpoint. That second-to-last screen with the birds is much easier with it, and the Doppelganger can sometimes give you a really nice break and get stuck in the middle platform where you can reach it with the axe

I've actually already beaten this game on the second quest with solo Trevor, which was a nightmare. That said, I've just found a really good strategy for Stage 9 (which is easily the hardest 2nd quest stage; took me 3 hours), so I could maybe do it in a much better time now

Beat Castlevania III with solo Trevor again since the Anniversary Collection is on sale. Still my favorite NES game and I'm very glad I've stuck with the NES version. The extra challenge on NES over Famicom makes it so much more fun on repeat playthroughs

Here's the full recording. You can see me struggle with the input latency while I'm trying to get out of Norfair. I really ought to get a composite video splitter

This early Super Missile pickup in Metroid Zero Mission is really cool to get. When I went back to record it, I ended up getting it on my first try despite my DVD recorder's terrible latency

I suppose the difficult part then is making the model itself, but then you can use that model for just about anything you can think of, since its look is already defined for every angle you could ever want to view it at

For my first animation, I think this looks decent. The nice part about 3D animation is that it's just setting bones in poses and adjusting where needed. 2D animation needs a new drawing for each frame, which is a lot more work
100
Steven Trevathen @kopper0625.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
I hope to have the full animation completed soon. I plan to make a few more Prince of Persia animations after this as well, though this one is actually the most complex, since it has two characters interacting with complexity as well as texture animation

Steven Trevathen @kopper0625.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
The game at the bottom is Prince of Persia for the Apple II. The animation is choppy on purpose to mimic it. I made all of the animation and effects (like the outline) in Blender, and the textures in GIMP with reference to the original game's environment (no torches though)

Working on a rather large animation, and I think this section works well on its own. Prince of Persia's animation is very well-made

The biggest nightmare for me while making this was getting the game to accept my model. Since the game expects each bone to have vertices assigned to it, I had to create dummy collision to make it happy. Everything after that was nice and easy, though, thanks to my helper scripts

Since the original texture sheet does not include textures for looking left/right/down or for blinking, I made my own in GIMP. The setup I have means I could put this model in Wind Waker in the future
Screenshot of GIMP, an image-manipulation program. The canvas shows a texture sheet for a cat with four expressions: neutral, surprised, serious, and happy. Each face is cartoonish, and the images are bisected to save spaceScreenshot of GIMP, an image manipulation program. The canvas shows a drawing of cat eyes, half-open. The eyes are set against a solid-color dark background, and further variations of these eyes are shown at the right, in the image layers.

The models and textures are mostly ripped from Streetpass Mii Plaza on the 3DS. I used the LZ77 Batch tool to decompress them, and Switch Toolbox to get the models and textures themselves
Screenshot of Switch Toolbox, a file browsing and data extraction tool. Shown are a list of directories and a 3D viewport with a textureless cat head model.

High-res textures are included (and shown here prominently), though you can switch back to low-res with the tab key (works best in N64 mode)
Comparison of three Ocarina of Time screenshots. Each shows a black cat looking at the viewer. The images decrease in texture resolution; the first is a high-res screenshot with high-res textures, the next is a high-res screenshot with low-res textures, and the last is a low-res screenshot with low-res textures

I think the style of music is really fitting for this discovery. It's triumphant, and even more grandiose than I'd imagined. It's a shame it's rather region-specific, being solely from (as far as I know) a 1987 sports event in India broadcast on the public TV station Doordarshan

For the longest time, I'd only had the synth intro to go by, so I figured this was from some kind of DOS Olympics game. I'm pretty glad to be wrong about that, though I could still imagine a crunched version of this being pretty cool

Steven Trevathen @kopper0625.bsky.social · 09/06/2026
It's likely derivative of the famous "Chariots of Fire" theme, but I highly prefer this song. The progression from synth to full band is great, and the video really sells it. The shots are very well-composed, and the torch relay across various landscapes is a lovely image

Some areas in Paper Mario feature a rim lighting effect that is achieved in a manner that is extremely simple for the surprisingly effective results it produces, being simply shifting around a shadow copy of the sprite.
The rim lighting effect in Paper Mario is created in an extremely simple manner.
[the sprites are taken, copied, recolored black, then the black version is offset, made transparent, and trimmed to the original sprite]
Note how this coincidentally results in a realistic shadow of the cap on Mario's face because the shadow is just the brim recolored black
