It's time for journalists to stop reporting uncritically on drug busts
Evidence links enforcement to harms, including overdose and death. We need to stop giving cover for it.

I feel like the debate about what parts of AI are good and what parts are bad should wait until we solve the worldwide crisis caused by the fact that almost of all of its evangelists in both tech and govt are morally, intellectually, and ethically unequipped to oversee it, when not downright evil.

I hate this kind of thing, because just beneath its surface is a smug piety that treats "politics" as nothing but mess and rancor rather than as something with a direct connection to people's lives, and argues for being "above politics" as a kind of virtue. It's so dishonest. Anyway, good morning.

Parton spoke in support of gay people for close to forty years. I am old enough to vividly remember the limb she was out on in doing so. So let me put it another way: We may not know what her politics were, but we certainly know what they weren't.

Alberta just closed a 62-bed treatment centre with 600 ppl on its wait list so they can convert the site into an involuntary care facility aka an administrative detention centre. First they came for the addicts, but I am not an addict, etc… theijf.org/article/reco...
A confidential Recovery Alberta planning document from 2025, obtained (https://theijf.org/article/edmonton-addiction-treatment-and-detox-sites-eyed-for-forced-treatment-program-document-reveals) by the IJF, shows that the province had initially chosen Henwood as an interim location for secure “compassionate intervention” beds needed to implement involuntary addiction treatment legislation. The planning document stated that the centre’s voluntary addiction treatment program would need to be closed for renovations to align with a fall 2026 launch.

Nearly every past atrocity was legal, nearly every liberatory movement to end it was not. Resistance is criminalized because oppressors write laws that protect their cruelty and make our objection to it illegal.

We’re all just people. learningmoments.substack.com/p/dead-peopl...
There is another element of harm reduction that is rarely quantified in the statistics but is absolutely vital to the process of recovery: human connection. Stigma is a quiet poison. It tells people who use drugs that they are less than human, that they’re a nuisance, that their lives don’t matter. After years of being ignored, stepped over, and looked at with disgust, people internalize that message. They stop believing they’re worth saving.
