I'm sorry.

The cover of The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein, but now the tree is dropping a sword onto the child's head. The text on the tree has been modified to now say "The Sword Giving Tree". It's all rather amateurish, because AI wasn't used and I'm not much of a graphic artist.

Our Share of Night is one of my favorite horror books from the last ... I don't know when. Ever. Rich beyond my ability to describe. I can also vouch that House of Bone and Rain by @gabino.bsky.social is an absolute banger.

I like paper clay okay but I think foam clay / clay foam has been a game-changer for me. I think @manningkrull.bsky.social would agree.

@kuzhalimanickavel.bsky.social you’ll never guess what I picked up from my local bookstore last night.

Photograph of a hand holding a book. The title is A Compendium of Supernatural Entities Found in the Government Girls Higher Secondary School. The cover is black, yellow, and red and features a human torso and head.

@pdjeliclark.bsky.social we discussed Ring Shout at our horror book club and the unanimous consensus is that it was too short and we want MORE.

@keithrosson.bsky.social I got a splinter under my fingernail today and once I got it out I started to think about wire and all I can say is that it had best be as good as you describe ‘cause there’s very little I can imagine would compel me to do that intentionally.

This is Booker’s not-really-awake face. Eyes open but unfocused. Also his brother Quentin doesn’t understand personal space.

Photograph of two tabby cats on a bed. One is laying on his side, the other on his back.

Closer photograph of one of the cats, Booker, who is still lying on his back.

Closer still. He’s starting to wake up and focus

I would add that an incredible album, On the Spot by the Hot 8 Brass Band is also 1 hour and 1 minute long, though perhaps not as conducive to peaceful strolling.

Got this from a Little Free Library nearby. It’s pretty far down in my TBR but I’m excited for when I get to it. It’ll be my first Simenon.

Photograph of the book Maigret’s Boyhood Friend by Georges Simenon. The cover is mostly white with a black line outline of a jester.

@chuckwendig.bsky.social reading this WaPo article and something about it is really familiar but I can’t put my finger on why. wapo.st/4rytWEN

Screenshot from the news article which reads:

When Montserrat started his oak nursery, he looked for the trees his grandmother had spoken of. "I traveled to a lot of rural places in the Iberian peninsula and Balearic Islands, and spoke to many old people who'd say,
"That oak over there is sweet, he says.
"Now we have plantations to cultivate the sweet acorn, not as a new nut but a recovered one."

Does my Speak-n-Spell feel pain when I type O-U-C-H? The jury is out. Philosophers and neuroscientists say that's fucking stupid, but I called a guy from the Center for Pretending that Household Electronics Are Sentient and he said there's no way to know for sure.

MAN. I just finished it and FIVE STARS. Complicated, enervating, energizing, heartfelt, gory, driving, sad, fantastical, just all around excellent. @keithrosson.bsky.social the three words coming out of the walkie-talkie in Novak's compound felt like ice in my heart.

I was like “wait maybe I’m making too big a deal of this” so I went to see if I had left a review on Goodreads - I do not always take the time - and I had.

Screenshot of a book review which reads: Unstoppable book. Hits the ground running and never looks back. I enjoy the way Rosson captures tiny nuances in the middle of all the gory horror ("He's stunned to see her standing on his porch. "Katherine?" He leans over and sets the wine down on an end table inside and she can't help it, she starts crying. She covers her mouth and says, in a high, pained voice, "Hi, Arthur.'"). I enjoy the way he captures the gory horror too. The constant shifting of perspective between characters gives everything a weight that I didn't expect. I feel like we were given a chance to know everyone a little more than we usually would be in a book of this type. I haven't read many books that fit into the "bloodthirsty masses" genre - avoiding the z-word here as that's not exactly what's happening - and this book honestly wouldn't compel me to pick any others up because they can't possibly be as good.
I think if I had to pick a favorite thing, it's the run-on sentence that is the last we hear from Simon Osterberg.
It's just propulsion, blood-pounding-in-your-ears prose.
I read it out loud and it gives me goosebumps.
I can not wait to read the second book. My entire to-read pile is getting shifted around here, the line is being jumped. I want to keep this momentum.

we roasted carrots the other night and my wife put them away and this is how I found them the next day and I’m not really okay with this

Photograph of carrots in a food storage container. The carrots are curled to fit and it makes them look like not carrots. There are some other container lids on the countertop but seriously it’s about these curved carrots.

also can I just add that as a right-handed person this photograph was an absolute pain in the ass to take? You know, back in 2007 when I was carrying around a huge Canon DSLR which had the shutter button on the right (of course). But here I am 19 years later using it for a dumb post so … success.
