ProPublica designed a reporting experiment to demonstrate how easy it can be to open private schools that might then access public money. We succeeded in opening two schools. No credentials or background checks required.

😳 The country you keep claiming as the 51st American state? That you’ve attacked with a trade war? That you denigrate every day? They need to be more respectful to you????

Americans are relearning the lesson we learned during the Gilded Age of the late 1890s, when robber barons ran the government and the economy for their own benefit: Oligarchy is incompatible with the common good. I'm hopeful we'll respond with a new progressive movement.

At least 52 people have died in ICE custody since Trump returned to the White House. At least 23 people have been shot at by federal immigration agents. And thousands more have been caged, separated from their families, or shipped off to dangerous countries. The cruelty is endless.

As with some other things, i suspect if we have another dem president we will discover that the court did not so much transfer power to the executive as to themselves, ie they will find novel bullshit reasons to block a dem president the same way the find novel bullshit reasons to enable trump

The worst thing is that they’re all going along with this idiocy, spending money and resources because Trump is embarrassed by how badly he f’d this up when they all know what the truth is.

Can I let you in on a secret? It's easy to create lots of shitty jobs that don't pay well. Yes, the economy added jobs last month, but real wages are dropping. The paychecks of most American workers aren’t covering rising costs — they’re getting poorer. This isn't something to celebrate.

The world’s ten richest people — almost all Americans — saw their collective net worth increase by $220 billion in May. These ten people are now worth a combined $2.9 trillion. The bottom 50% of U.S. households, is worth $4.3 trillion. Wondering if inequality is out of control?

That’s why a majority of Republicans think it’s OK to disregard & dismiss the results of all of the court cases, recounts, forensic audits and hand counts confirming Trump‘s 2020 loss. They think it’s perfectly permissible to ignore the law and the courts when you don’t like their rulings.

One of many reasons why the Founders specifically chose not to require that is because 8 of the signers of the Declaration of Independence were born outside the colonies and 9 of the 95 representatives elected to the first Congress were born outside the US.

A whooping cough outbreak in an elementary school down the road. Meanwhile I finally got around to reading Candle In the Dark and only a few pages in, you get to its eerily prescient passage. Sigh.
"I have a foreboding of an America in my children's or grandchildren's time -- when the United States is a service and information economy; when nearly all the manufacturing industries have slipped away to other countries; when awesome technological powers are in the hands of a very few, and no one representing the public interest can even grasp the issues; when the people have lost the ability to set their own agendas or knowledgeably question those in authority; when, clutching our crystals and nervously consulting our horoscopes, our critical faculties in decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good and what's true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness...

The dumbing down of American is most evident in the slow decay of substantive content in the enormously influential media, the 30 second sound bites (now down to 10 seconds or less), lowest common denominator programming, credulous presentations on pseudoscience and superstition, but especially a kind of celebration of ignorance"
