🧪 NEW RESEARCH: The fossil fuel industry’s use of AI tools to extract oil and gas more quickly and in greater quantities could create 3.3-13.3 times more climate pollution than from the fossil fuels burned to power AI’s data centers. Which itself is prodigious. www.nature.com/articles/s44...

Who would want children to suffer from a diseases with severe complications such as blindness and encephalitis? Clearly only someone who never needed to worry about encephalitis his whole life. #measles #MMR #US

Three-dimensional rendering of the Earth showing the Americas and the Atlantic Ocean. A continuous blue-to-red color scale is mapped across the globe, with cooler colors concentrated at high northern latitudes and warmer colors over much of the tropics and subtropics. Land is shown as shaded gray topography with coastlines outlined in black, against a black background.

Qualia goes where curiosity leads. This week, writer Philip Ball goes down a contentious rabbit hole to see if living organisms (including the rabbit) have agency, or do things for their own reasons. Read the latest column: www.quantamagazine.org/is-life-just...

Is Life Just Different? | Quanta Magazine
The idea of ‘biological agency’ — that life devises its own goals and behaves accordingly — complicates our understanding of what it means to be alive. But does it serve a scientific purpose?

NIH grants have been under political scrutiny since early 2025. But what does the screening process actually look like? What is being flagged? I spent a month digging into leaked docs and emails. We've published the 235-word list that are being flagged by an internal AI tool. And so much more. 🧵

Inside the new political screening that’s stalling NIH grants
Mandatory reviews by top health officials and checks for 235 disfavoured terms have left hundreds of vetted grant applications in administrative limbo.

I totally agree, science is not a simple optimization problem, or at least not in the form conceived by most existing systems. @battleday.bsky.social and I wrote about this recently from a somewhat different perspective (emphasizing the 'problem problem'): gershmanlab.com/pubs/Battled...

A simple baseline for AI forecasting in machine learning
In a recent paper, SFI Complexity Postdoctoral Fellow Yuanzhao Zhang and co-author William Gilpin show that a deceptively simple forecasting strategy can outperform several leading machine learning forecasting models. Their method, called context parroting, relies on short stretches of time-series data (or context). As it moves through the time series, it scans for similar patterns or motifs that appeared earlier in the sequence, and uses those patterns to predict what might come next.

"Superintelligent AI will finally cure cancer" is the promise many AI companies are making to governments, investors, and consumers alike. As they claim: more intelligence = more chances of finding a cure. But as FLI's Dr. Emilia Javorsky lays out in a new essay, it's not nearly that simple. 🧵1/2
