I want to share two poems with you. The first was written in the ruins of World War I; the second, in the gathering storm of World War II. To me, both feel appropriate to the dark time we’re now living through. Read them and let me know your thoughts.

🧵Industrial growth turned Bradford into a city shaped by migration. As its mills and factories expanded, so did the need for labour. In the 1840s large numbers of Irish migrants began to arrive, making up around 10% of its population by 1850. Earlier, in the 1820s and 1830s, German 1/3
This photograph depicts a British Pakistani man working in a spinning mill in Bradford during the 1980s. The image captures the industrial heritage of West Yorkshire, which has a long history of employing South Asian workers in its textile mills. The worker is shown tending to a large spinning machine, a common sight in Bradford's numerous textile factories during the mid-to-late 20th century. This period saw significant migration from South Asia, particularly Pakistan, to help fuel the labour needs of the UK's industrial centers.
