Seems like the guy thinks of listening to music as an optimization problem, which is (I agree) a very strange way to think about listening to music.

The Talmud teaches that anyone who sustains one soul, has sustained an entire world. For generations, Jewish New Yorkers have sustained our city. Today, we are launching the first-ever municipal Strategy to Combat Antisemitism.

Shoot, meant to say Kedzie has protected lanes, not Kimball.

It's a pretty good area for biking. Wilson is the safest east-west route. Never ever ride on Irving Park. For north-south rides, Kimball has protected lanes, and you can ride through parks along the river. Elston is decent, but can get a little hairy. Tailwind Bikes on Lawrence is great.

There's a lot of great stuff here that is also Chicago relevant: "[School closure] savings are so small because buildings are not where the money goes. A school district spends most of its budget on people: teachers, aides, counselors, principals, bus drivers."

Someone just reminded me of this year and a half old comment, by liking it, and actually, I think it was a real banger.

You might be able to find a municipal or county building inspector, who would be able to do an inspection and determine if it’s unlivable or not.

Send the human beings who programmed these systems to jail, and then send the reporters from the NY Times who are gormlessly reporting on the situation back to journalism school.

Thanks for that. It means a lot to know that the work I’ve done on myself around this is making sense to other people.

I guess what I'm getting at is, there's multiple strategies that can effectively prevent hazing. It's not actually that hard to do, it just takes an actual intention to prevent hazing. Anyplace where hazing is happening, it's because the leadership approves of hazing. The end.

Jamey @klocktower.org · 25/09/2026
And I think of my high school marching band, in Ferndale Michigan, where there was a long tradition of hazing when our new band director came in. He made it 100% clear, there would be zero tolerance for it. It was reiterated consistently. And that worked, it changed the culture.

Jamey @klocktower.org · 25/09/2026
The marching band at Northwestern was and is an intensely weird group: we jokingly embraced that it's a cult, and a band. During my time there, in the 90s (when Pat Fitzgerald was playing football for NU), there were a few things that crossed the line. They were dealt with, subtly but effectively.

Jamey @klocktower.org · 25/09/2026
Speaking to my personal experience: The football coach at Northwestern, Pat Fitzgerald, was fired for cause, because there was hazing occurring in his program, under his watch. He was not a leader who was committed to preventing it. Now he's coaching football at Michigan State. God help them.

Jamey @klocktower.org · 25/09/2026
Hazing sucks *incredibly* in fact, and it's pervasive, because so many of our institutions, both formal and informal, are grounded in cultish, hierarchical, violent practices. AND it's not actually that hard to prevent. You just have to put in leaders who are committed to ending that violence.

Jamey @klocktower.org · 25/09/2026
When my alma mater (Northwestern) had a revelation of hazing in the football program a few years ago, it gave me the impetus to re-process a lot of my experience, particularly because I have a sort of vestigial tie to that football program (as a marching band alum). Hazing sucks.
1110
Jamey @klocktower.org · 25/09/2026
Yeah. Hazing is an issue that hits me hard, because of my history with it as a high school athlete. It is fundamentally disgusting, and the kind of dehumanizing that is very specifically cult shit. The people who engage in this behavior are trying to build cults.

I think that the way he tried to build his Temu Brownshirt corps was also part of his disaster: in 2024 he picked up a lot of Latino voters, many of whom discovered that DHS was going after them too, citizens or not. And their violence shocked suburban soccer moms.

It's important to remember that even if you don't give a shit about trans people, every law that is passed to hurt them will be eventually be used to hurt you too.

Even if we pretend that polls still work, we have to acknowledge that the New York Times doesn’t publish anything political without an agenda that supports their billionaire owners. We’re in a new era of yellow journalism, and NYT is a major player in it.

Taking a look at M3’s website, it doesn’t seem that “accuracy” is among the criteria they strive for in their polling. “Advocacy” and “Effectiveness” are what they’re selling.

Well, apparently you can’t fix stupid. Or, maybe it’s up to Texans to deal with the fact that moms there are, according to this report, terminally stupid, cowardly, or maybe just possibly looking for a way to be a bigot without being called out for being a bigot!

Yes, but a lot of the voters in the 2024 election were what we call "low information voters," which (as I put it at the time) are people whose politics are informed primarily from a silenced TV at the back of the bar, next to the one they're watching.

Jamey @klocktower.org · 20/09/2026
I think that you're correct, and that the Democratic party leadership is afraid to press the attack in part because if they actually do win majorities, people will expect them to do things, and actually accomplishing anything is not their goal. They'd rather collect checks for losing.

To be fair, he didn't say that people agree with Trump's immigration policies, he just said that immigration is Trump's best issue. So, like, 31% approval on that, and below 30% on everything else?

Over in Chapin, we used to play football in the hallway, but one player had the position “ball” so there was no quarterback or receivers and we called the game “knock that fucker down.”

Sure, but if you were to look into gender-affirming health care, as you have been advised to do, you would learn that nobody gets surgery during the sort of exploratory phase you went through. You're inventing a thing to be worried about, which doesn't exist in the real world.

I'm sorry that you had a rough adolescence, and I say that as someone who also had a rough adolescence. As someone who works with teenagers, I can assure you that teenagers who know that they are trans really do know themselves, they aren't fumbling about like we were.
