Ok now that I’ve had much more time I read through it, and to me it still seems that classical liberalism was focused on laissez faire free market economics and freedoms for the individual, rather than modern liberalism, so I still don’t see how it’s wrong to say it used to be about free market. 1/2

Alas I do not have time to sit down and read an entire Wikipedia article in the middle of the workday, but I will come back to read it later. My understanding from what I know at this moment is that in American politics liberal has meant free market for at least the last couple centuries.

My further understanding is outside of politics it goes back to just Latin meaning of freedom/liberty but took on the later meaning which sees much more widespread use within American politics and is how it is used in common term now.
