Sending this out to whoever needs to see it: It's okay if you read slowly, there's no great victory in being able to read quickly, everyone kind of has their own reading speed, and that's perfectly fine. I'm just really happy you're reading. I hope it gives you joy at any pace. Thank you!

You can't control: 👉 How many rejections you'll get 👉 How much $$ a publisher will offer you 👉 How many copies you'll sell (at least directly) 👉 How many reviews or ads you'll get 👉 If you'll win an award or reach bestseller status What you CAN control is writing the best book you possibly can.

Here's a taster of my eco-fantasy books. A mermaid has a slight altercation with a pod of orcas.
Excerpt from Andie Holman's third book, The Unbearable Melt. Shows a picture of an orca and the author's website www.andieholman.com
"My magic scattered as I winged through their spray, somersaulting head over tail. I bounced off another before being tossed to a third.
   Fun times.
Knowing death loomed before me, I distracted myself with orca facts.
They didn’t get the moniker of ‘killer’ by accident. Ancient Spanish sailors initally called them ballena asesina, or “whale killer,” but somewhere it got flipped. And technically, they were dolphins.
Crazy smart thirty-foot dolphins with fifty interlocking teeth, each one conical and three inches long, used for ripping and tearing.
But they didn’t chew their food. They swallowed it in chunks.
   Ask me how I knew."

I went and saw Project Hail Mary. A guy came in with his service dog and the dog sat there the whole time just concentrating on the movie. Afterwards I told the guy I was amazed your dog watched the movie like that. He replied, me too especially because he hated the book.

Picture of a turtle approaching a plastic bag. Text says, "Leatherback Turtle Short Story. This is a new project. I will post short stories highlighting various animals, particularly those at risk. At the end, I'll offer a link to a conservation group. I'd love your feedback!" This is from the substack newsletter Eco fantasy with Andie.

A formal color portrait of Grace Hopper in her later years, standing with arms confidently crossed. She wears the full dress blue uniform of a U.S. Navy rear admiral, complete with gold shoulder boards bearing stars, a combination cap with elaborate gold embroidery and eagle insignia, ribbon bars, and a name tag reading "COMO HOPPER." Her short white hair is neatly styled, and she wears large glasses, gazing directly at the camera with a serious, resolute expression. A large American flag with gold fringe and tassels hangs prominently behind her against a plain backdrop.

Writing Tip: When you're done the first draft, reread, reread, reread. Just read it over and over again until you get sick of it. Edit as you go, like polishing a precious jewel. The quality of the work often depends on how many times you can reread it before you get sick of looking at it.
